AOD wont shift out of OD when gas applied
I've got an AOD with a transgo kit (and the high rpm regulator) and she acts like a queen through all of her gears, shifting at just the right points, responding to throttle with a nice crisp downshift exactly like she's supposed to until.... I hit OD. Then she'll not get out of OD until I slow down below ...I think.... 45 mph. I can floor it at 50 mph and she'll stay in OD.
The TV cable is hooked up perfect (lokar cable). I set it with a pressure guage and the ford .275 feeler and, like I said, it responds appropriatley in all other gears. If I use the shifter to go into "3" , she'll drop into third, however. What could be wrong? Any ideas?

I stumped everyone, huh?
I'm gonna call transgo and see what they say...

They say that the TM valve and it's 2 associated springs might be stuck into it's bore and that is preventing proper operation of the TV system. I guess I have some spelunking to do this weekend!

hey CP,
in the forum i normally haunt, someone was having issues not really related to yours, but something mentioned (i dont know much about slushboxes): i guess there is some sort of cork gasket above the filter or something like that, and it does not come with some filters, and some forget about it. like i said, not your problem, and you probably knew that, but something to remember to install when buttoning it up. good luck. |

I spotted the cork gasket and made sure everything was in place when I bolted up. Considering it was the first time I ever saw a ford slushbox at all, I did a damn good job at rebuilding it and applying a transgo kit.
Now I just need to get the stomach to drop the pan and somehow collect 15 quarts of fluid, drop the valvebody and fix the problem. I wish ford had the insight to incorporate a drain plug in their transmission oilpan!

good luck, CP. sounds like you got it covered, esp considering your limited experience.
good luck. |

Curses on the fool that said: "hey! I have an idea: lets make every bolt in the valve body a different length!" A plague on your house!
What a mess transmission work makes! I doubly wish for a drainplug now.... Did you know mercon3 dissolves latex gloves? Can I use mercron 5 in here? Do they make synthetic ATF/m5 and is it better in any way?

Oh no!!! (or, yay, nothing's wrong)
The tm valve moves like poetry. My only guess is that 1. I do indeed have the tv cable a bit too tight and am suplying too much pressure 2. It seemed the transmission was overfilled by a quart, maybe a quart and a half. After a good 6 hours straight of tinkering, I'm _beat_. I'm just gonna reinstall the valvebody and hope for a miracle.

CP, sounds like an exercise in futility. sorry to hear that.
having different lengths of bolts surprises you how, exactly? LOL J/K. i expect only the best and most logical. as i recall, Mercon 5 supercedes mercon 3. i think M1 ATF meets Mercon requirements (i think from using it on my sis' probe). and it is relatively cheap from the local parts store. (did you know that a 95 probe has no filter on the AOD - just a drain plug). i about puked when i saw that. i would think being overfilled that much would make a difference. but i really dont understand the inner workings of an Auto. they do seem to be pretty level sensitive, though. mercon dissolving latex....i wonder what it does to your skin. might try nitrile........ well, good luck with it. |

AHA!!!
The accumulator was stuck in it's bore. I think that would only affect the 2-3 shift but I fixed it anyway. I took the valve out and rolled it gently in some 1000 grit, cleaned, lubed it and tried until it dropped easily into it's bore. I get this creeping feeling that I seize up components each time I bolt up the valvebody. Oh well, We'll see tommorrow.

CP, glad you are smart enough to find the problem (i would be clueless). i bet you got it figured and all will be well. sometimes it takes a time or two to get it right. part of learning. i have done it many many times. esp when dealing with small parts and passages that are finicky. part of the game.
good luck and let us know how it works. |

summit sells a drain plug kit for tranny pans. i highly recommend you purchase one and the next time you have the pan off, install it. Or buy a nice aftermarket pan with the drain already installed. you can pick them up at fun Ford drag events at a huge discount direct from the manufacture.

Hey, it's semi-fixed! I needed to tighten up the tv cable till it's about 38-39 psi and at roughly 45 mph, if I punch it, the tv pressure jumps to about 65 and it will hop back to 3rd. At 50-55 mph, it will no longer jump.
Is that 38-39 psi too much or can I ride around on it? Should there be tv pressure at cruise? Like 10-20 psi? I was riding around in 3rd to simulate 5.18 gears and see how it fared. Not bad. About 18 mpg plus I was spraying gas from the disconnected return hose, so it would be an even better figure.
