Post MSD Ignition

Just what is it, how does it work, and when is it a good idea to have it.

Hey Dan it's only money The MSD is a aftermarket ignition which is more powerful and accurate then the stock unit. The 6A is just a performance igniton module, the 6AL and other models have soft touch rev limiter so you can raise the stock rev limiter from 6250 to basically what ever you need. The MSD coils fire a hotter spark whci helps burn the unspent fuel more efficently. Basically I feel you should upgrade as things go bad or if they have a ton of miles and are wearing out. A built performance motor will benifit from the hotter spark, and the rev limiter. I just picked up a 6A from my friend for $20.00, I am going to add on the rev limiters which will costy about another $80.00, the coils run between $30.00-$45.00.

I know this is reguarding MSD on Mustangs but I just added the MSD 6A and Blaster 2 coil to my F150 with the 300 CI inline 6. I must say the performance and fuel mileage gains are noticeable. I added these components to the F150 first because it will be towing the Mustang and I wanted better fuel mileage and a little more power. In addition, I thought if I didn't like the components on the F150 I could install them on the Mustang since they both have the same igniton system. Hopefully I will be adding another MSD 6A to the Mustang in the spring.

I hadn't really considered it for my application, like you said, better to wait till there is an obvious need or the stock gear needs replacing. But there was a guy who was asking about alternators and he was wondering what effect an upgrade would have on his "MSD" unit. I wasn't sure what the function an msd was. It sounds like a good idea however, even if your stock gear isn't worn out yet.

Actually it won’t raise your stock rev limiter, you need another computer to do that.
The stock rev limiter cuts off the fuel at 6250 rpm's but you can raise it to 6450 by wiring the fuel pump to the ignition; at that point the computer cuts off the injectors. Having the fuel shut off is not the best way to control rpm's especially if you ever run NOS. The msd controls rpm's by cutting out spark.

The coil in the mustangs is a pretty good unit, so you probably will not notice much gain in performance but it is still a good piece to have.
