Default t-5 fluid answers?

I just swapped a new t-5 from 5.0resto, into my car, and I know that the majority of folks recommend ATF fluid instead of gear oil for the t-5, (mainly iirc because of the needle bearings) But mine came w/ gear oil in it, why would the factory put non-spec flid in their tranny? I just got the thing in, and would rather not have to change the fluid already, but....
Anyway, is gear oil that dangerous for the t-5? If I need to swap, can the gear oil and ATF mix in the case without adverse effects?

Sorry, but I've heard too many opinions, and need a solid answer.

Thanks for your help,

J

You need ATF in there.

Just call late model restoration supply and ask them.

There are a few racers and shops that swear by using gear oil in their t5's It is supposed to have trouble getting through the smaller openings but then again, the fluid in the tranny isn't pressurized so as long as the gears are swimming in it they feel that it works just fine. I'm on the fence over this one, if I had an 85+ WC T5I'd be using ATF. Older non-WC T5's are supposed to use gear oil since the do not have the bearings below the countershaft but if yuour tranny is new then I don't know why it would have gear oil in it..
