Could always get the speddo recalibrated. I bet this would also fix the bouncy problem.

It's the speedo cable. You should be able to replace it if you pop off the cluster and you can crawl down under the car. Mine did that for years and really made my friends laugh. While it is off, spray some wd-40 into the back of the cluster where the cable goes in and hang your cable vertically and sray wd-40 into the body so that any future binding will be preempted. Good luck!

Replaced but heck....I guess you could lube the hell out of it and it will quit binding...maybe. If you remove the cluster and pour silicone down the cable housing, you could save yourself from having to get under the car....maybe, if it's save-able.

I had the same problem when I bought my 91. I replaced the speedo gear and the cable and still had the same problem. I ended up having to replace the speedometer itself. On the back of the speedometer there is the weight and the thing that spins around it. They come into contact with each other and send the needle from 10 to 140. Mine was making the same pinging noise. Hopefully you just need a new cable or speedo gear. Speedo's themselves aren't cheap.

I've only priced them through Summit Racing and they usually have decent prices so I thought that's about what they cost.
Summit has all the part store prices beat in my area so that was my line of reasoning.

i got the same problem. picked up a cable and gonna pick a speedo gear as well. i think ford is the only place i can get the stock # of teeth. seems like all the aftermarket places only sell speedo gears like 3.55's and up. any know where else i can pick one up?
