My son was talking to a shop about getting a dyno-tune with a custom chip build. The shop mentioned $750 is this a good price?

Assuming you have a 5.0...and the engine is naturally aspirated...a $750 dyno tune is a waste of money, IMO. You can tune it yourself.

Set the static timing to 14 degrees and fuel pressure to 38-40 psig and go track test it. Change timing or fuel in 1-2 degree and 1-2 psi increments. Changes in mph will indicate if the adjustment was helpful. Tuning done... If you have special needs, like using a blower, competing in a class, etc., then you may want the dyno tune. Also, I think the pricing is on the high side of normal. The cost to dyno tune my '03 Cobra was $350. A chip is around $250+.

I agree with NO SLO, a dyno tune won't do much on a basically stock engine, but if you have a few mods ( heads, cam, intake and more) then it might be worth it. The price they gave you sounds a little high to me, it costs about that much up here in Canada.

Not a stock engine: AFR165s, Typhoon U/L intake, E303 CAM, converted to MAF, longtube headers, 75-100 shoot of juice (not using as yet), we've got an idling problem right now.

You could probably benefit from a dyno tune. Get the air/fuel mixture right where it should be. But I don't think you'd need a custom chip. $750 is ridiculously high priced...even with a chip included. Don't take it to that place.

I went to Detroit Speedworks / Livernois to get my car custom dyno tuned. I too was having idle issues and we got everything worked out perfectly on the dyno. I got my air-fuel ratio at a nice safe 12.5-12.6 all the way through the run and it smoothed out my power and torque curves very well. I was at the dyno about half a day and it cost ~$500 with the bung installation for the wide-band.

			$750 sounds a little high. E
