Question new O2 sensors now running way to rich

Is there a difference between O2 sensors besides the numbre of wires?
I changed my exhaust for an offroad H pipe without cat, and broke my stock O2 sensors.
So i replaced them with universal ones.
But since then the car idles and runs way to rich.
It is also much slower down low and a little slower up top, and burns a lot more fuel.
Any ideas what i did wrong or where to look.
The car is a '88 5.0 ho gt converted to mass air.
Thanks.
mike

well, obviously something went wrong there.. what brand are the o2's sensors? the universals however won't work at all.. get the specific sensor for the car and in that case, it doesn't hurt to get ones for the mass air'd cars 89-93 5.0 to better fit the computer.. some manufactures have different part numbers for those cars. autozone, advanced auto etc etc sensors are ok, but u will see a slight better performance and it really is noticable on the dyno with Ford OE sensors. but get those universals out of there and get the right ones for the car. hopefully u can return then. they should cost 40bucks each. let me know how it works.

sounds good... get the ford ones if you can.. there not much more expensive at all. the store bought ones tend to run leaner than original ford ones. hense the better gas mileage, but u loose the power and performance.

I've actually have had quite a few fords lately that had problems with aftermarket specific O2 sensors. ie Correct for that application, but from Autozone or Advance. Throw in a Ford one, and badda-bing. If you can afford it, I'd recommed staying true blue with the O2 sensors.

if you look at year one's website you can get a ford or just the dealer.. the cost doesn't vary from online to dealer on these.
