Advice about a 331 with forced induction
Hey all
i just have a few short things to ask: I would like to stroke my stock block 302 with a kit capable of supporting like 850hp. thats not my goal but i would like to to be able to handle it. i'm not sure what manufacturer is best to go with, and what types of parts. I heard different things for the type of crank and rods such as a 4430 or 2618 forged crank and h beam rods but dont really know what that means. also i would like to bore the block .040 over. will this be a problem when stroking it as well. in the future i would like to bolt up a turbo, i know i need low compression but not sure what i should go with for the stroker kit parts. I've heard about eagle and coast high performance and most say dont go with eagle cause they are weak. i am lookin to spend about 1600 on a stroker kit. i would like all forged pistons and crank. is this possible for that budget?. Right now my engine just has bolt ons, edlebrock rpm heads and an e303 cam. will the cam be good for forced induction as well? my goal is like 700hp. allthough i am new at building engines and plan on putting it all together myself. so far i have done well with my engine. Oh she only has 30,000mi on her so i dont think wear and tear will be a problem. Any advice for me would greatly be appreciated. |

A CHP Pro 331 stroker kit will cost you $1300. That cam won't cut it... and, neither will your stock block. You'll have to throw it in the trash and get an SVO/race block if you seriously want to run over 500 HP. Even at 500 HP a stock 302 production block is doomed eventually. Regardless, to make 700+ HP on a 331 you'll have to run SERIOUS heads, a SERIOUS cam, a SERIOUS intake, a serious fuel system, and LOTS of boost. You're probably looking at building about a $20K engine.

Exactly what he said, not possible on a 302... There is a guy with a 350 chevy with 2 twin turbo's making 1000HP.. Troy Trepanya from "rad rides by troy".. He is on the discovery channel all the time.. how he did that is beyond me..

Yeah, actually as a side note... unless you need to be class legal for a racing series cubic inch wise... don't even waste your time building that kind of 302 based mill. Go right to a 351 based mill. You can make 700 or so hp on a early model 351W production block with a girdle. An SVO block is still ideal. But, I'd say a must at 800+ hp. I used a production '73 351W block with a DSS billet aluminum main girdle myself for my supercharged 377 stroker.

Good advice above.
Also, if you bore the block out to .040 over, you will be at a 333 cu. in., not a 331 which is what you get with a 3.25 stroke, and 4.030 bore. So, if you bored the block .040 over, your '331' pistons wouldn't seal very well. E
