problem with posi rear
first off i was just wondering if all the GT's came stock with a posi rear or limited slip. I have a 91 GT and it seems like sometimes both wheels burn but other times only one spins when i smoke my tires. The car has 146k miles on it and i dont know if the diff oil has ever been changed or if the diff needs a rebuild. Any help on how i can get posi 100% of the time would be great. I know i could buy a new diff like an auburn or a trak-lok diff but i was wondering if there was an easier fix. All .02s are greatly appreciated. thanks

All GT's came with a "posi" rear. Sounds like you need a rebuild, although the only way to get both wheels 100% is with a spool. You can find a rebuild kit on ebay, with a new pin, and oil additive, for around $30 or so.
Good luck!

isn't the Trac Loc he is referring too...a Ford product??..and basically what he should have in the car now? Whether it is working is another issue.

Exactly, that's why I put it like this ---> "posi"
Positraction is a GM thing, Ford calls there's Trac-Loc. "Posi" has become a catch-all for limited slip diffs. Whatever you want to call it, me thinks a rebuild is in order though!

I was not questioning you Jester, was actually questioning myself. My third member was suppose to have come with a "trac-loc". If I try to power brake it in the burnout box it does a one wheel wonder thing. if I punch it and do not power brake...I get two wheels spinning every time. I have kinda come to believe this is just how the Trac Loc opperates. I guess Mine could be bad too....has less then 5,000 on it.
With 146,000 miles on his...I would not doubt it that it needs rebuilt. Ryan

Did you yank the cover and look at it? Honest bro, that sounds like an open diff to me! If you're in the water box, or loose gravel, sand, etc etc ie NO traction, an open diff will spin both of 'em. A Trac-Loc should and WILL lock the axles together when traction goes south.
I'd check into that. Real easy to tell once the cover is off. You running an 8.8" or a 7.5" or what you got in that thang??? hehehehe

It is an 8 inch rearend. Ordered it as a 4.10 with a Trac Loc third member swap probably 5 years ago. I always wondered if it was doing that cause I did not have the rear brakes adjusted exactly the same...applying a little more brake to one side when I power braked it. But then again, I think they were suppose to self adjust.
