Timing Chain
I have never seen a cam gear wore so badly. It is no wonder the s.o.b jumped time. It was over 90 degrees out of time. This came out of the 351W in my 84 F-150 4wd that I just bought. This is the original gear that came in the truck. Anyway, I just had to post this pic. And to say don't buy phenolic gears just because they are quiet. LOL.

Re: Timing Chain
It only had 155,000 on it. Between all the slack in the chain and the mostly gone teeth, I didn't even half to pull the gears off to remove the chain. It just came right off. I started her up tonight and to my surprise, no bent valves.

Re: Timing Chain
Heck, I've seen guys put that kinda stuff back on! LMAO There's still 2 or 3 good teeth there! Dem Windsors usually don't bend the valves, lotsa room in there. Of course, they usually aren't NINETY degrees out either! LOL
Glad all is well, and ya got her fixed Bro!

Re: Timing Chain
ya you'll have that. guy was wondering why his 460 lost oil pressure.
all the particles that had broken off from junk ass timing gears had stopped up oil pump screen. i've seen it a few other times as well. |

Re: Timing Chain
I was putting my 302 back together tonight and I couldn't exactly remember the correct how you put the timing gears in place. Last summer i up and decided i wanted a gear drive so i bought one and took the timing cover back off just waiting on the part. Being lazy, I never got around to putting it on then after reading more about them I decided to just use the double roller. 5 months later, now I cant remember if you line up the key way to the pin on the camshaft, but thats what i was thinking but its been to long. all ive worked on at school this year is Cummins 6cyl diesels. last year i rebuilt 2 302's one being mine and another one being a friend of mines then i had to put a 351w together that belonged to the instructor. i tried to get the old bastard to trade me but he wouldn't. but anyway if im right just knod your head and if im wrong correct me. thanks guys

Re: Timing Chain
My 460 years ago LOL had an oil pump lock-up, because of wear and the crap floating around in it. I couldnt kill that engine. It was just an old wood haulin truck, didnt want to spend much money on it. I rolled new rod and mains in with it still in the truck and threw in a new oil pump (back in 98) and its still running today LOL. The dot on the crank gear should be at 12:00 and the camshaft gear should be at 6:00 .
