oil pressure

what should the oil pressure be on a stock motor 90 gt? i've heard the rule is 10psi per 1000 rpm's. w/ my autometer electric oil pressure gauge taking readings from the stock location next to the oil filter. i run 10w-30

when cold:
idle 750rpm = 45-50psi
2000 rpm's = 55-60psi

oil pressure will get lower as car warms up....

when at operating temp: (190-195F)
idle 750rpm = 20-25psi
2000 rpm = 45-50psi

20-25psi seems a little low to me, but it never dips under 20psi. should i start using 10w-40 when winter is over?

I'm sure you are aware that the reason oil pressure drops after the motor warms up has to do with the oil's "thickness" relative to its temperature. In a sense, warm oil is going to be less dense than cold oil. Be more concerned with the oil pressure once you are driving the car.

Check the level of oil in your car next time its cold. Low oil can show low pressure readings.

So basically, the answer to your question is 'No'. 10w-40 is not neccessary.

yes i know oil pressure drops as engine temps rise, due to the oil being less dense. the oil level when cold is right on the full line, directly above the cross hatched area.

According to the Haynes repair manual, the spec. for oil pressure is 40-65 psi @2000 RPM with engine warm.

Chris, your numbers on your autometer gauge are the same numbers I get when I drive the car. If it never gets above 20 then you need to worry.

Oil pressure seems OK to me as well. As the viscosity decreases with warm up, you actually get more oil to the bearings. What does it read at 4000 rpm warmed up.? That would be my question?

Some guys go to great lengths to jack up the oil pressure. All that does is rob power from the engine IMHO.

My car has 10 psi oil pressure at the traps, at 120 MPH around 6 grand on the tach, ON PURPOSE.
