I'm getting ready to pull my 82 out of mothballs and give it a little more get up and go. I want to swap the stock 4 speed for a newer 5 speed. Is this possible and if so, what year tranny do I have to look for?

Very possible, very easy. Look for a T5 from an 85-up stang. If the donor is an 86 or better, grab the crossmember too, it'll be the double hump.

I heard the 4 speed is better than the 5. Someone told me the 5th gear overdrive is worhtless. 4 speeds are supposebly better in racing i heard but im not to sure. I dont know much. =)

You don't use 5th racing, it's a gas mileage gear. The T-5 is a far FAR better transmisson for racing than the SROD (Single Rail Over Drive) 4 speed he has now. 4th is OD with a SROD.

Dont forget to get a T-5 bellhousing. The SROD bellhousing will not fit a T-5. Plus, you can sell your old SROD bellhousing to people looking to put Tremec 3550's in their car.

Thanks for all the good info. I'm mainly looking for a good tranny for crusing. I don't think she'll be a racer - never know though - depends how the motor performs. Will I be able to use my stock driveshaft? What's the latest year for a T-5 that would fit my 82? Is the T-5 used in the stangs from the 90's also? What is the advantage of a crossmember later the 85? Hump for dual exhaust?

just make sure its an 85 thru 93, 94 & 95's input shaft is to long. a buddy of mine put a t5 in his 84 that had a srod and i dont think he changed his driveshaft so i think you'll be in good shape there. good luck

1983-1984 the T-5 was a non-WC unit rated at 265lb/ftwith a tall 2.95:1 first gear. 1985-1990 WC T-5's were rated at 265lb/ft, but offered an improved output shaft, better syncros, and a 3.35:1 1st gear ratio. 1990-1993 WC T-5's were rated at 300lb/ft with a 3.35:1 first gear as the gears were upgraded to a harder nickle alloy set and the syncros were again updated. 1993 Cobra's used a Cobra spec T-5 using a 3.35:1 first gear, phosphate coated gears, and a tapered roller bearing on the input shaft instead of the weaker needle bearings in previous models. It was rated at 310lb/ft. The Z-spec T-5 was basically a Cobra T-5 with a 2.95:1 first gear. It was rated at 335lb/ft. Avoid the early, non WC T-5 transmissions, and if possible, get a 1990 T-5 or newer. |
