Default will my slicks cause me to bog now?

As some of you know, I bought my first set of slicks the other day.
A friend of mine says now that I will have traction, that my car will bog off the line and that my 2500 stall converter won't be enough.

I had plenty of grunt off the line last year with only a 7.5 rear and 2:73 gears and street tires. Actually, I had major traction problems.
Now, I'll have the 4:10, 8.8 rear with trac-loc and the slicks.
Do you think I will still bog off the line?
BTW, last year with those crappy gears and street tires I ran a best of 13.57@104mph. I should be solidly in the 12's now.
Any predictions?

Yeah, you'll bog. Easy fix, launch harder. Play with air pressure, play with launch RPM, get them to spin a bit so you can get her moving.

If you do exactly what you did last year, the answer is YES. But it shouldn't be a big deal to overcome.

well..last year I had to ease off the line and then punch it at the 60' mark to get that 13.56 E.T....and that was with crappy gears and a 7.5 rear!
My track will have it's first test & tune session on the 20th of this month so I'll just have to mess around with launch speeds and tire pressure I guess.
BTW, I was also told that if you run slicks, they like you to have metal valve stems and stock style lug nuts........why?

With a 351 and 4.10's you shouldnt bog at all. I would like to see you with more of a stall but the 2500 stall should do ok.

What was your 60ft on street tires?

Slicks make going to the track fun instead of frustrating.

enjoy man,

Yes according to the NHRA rulebook you need metal valve stems with slicks, they may or may not check it. The studs need to extend into the lug, the distance equal to twice the diameter.

My 60' times were between 2.2 and 2.3 with street tires.

I'm not quite sure what that means.

Whatever the diameter of the studs that attatch the wheels to the axle, twice that measurement needs to be engaged by the lugs (nuts) that attatch the wheels to the axle. Hope that makes sense.

Ooooh...that might be a problem. If my studs are too short, does that mean I'll have to remove the axles to install longer studs?

Yep. (Sorry!)

Also with slicks, and the ET's you'll be running a driveshaft loop is required. And aftermarket axles are recommended. Aren't rules fun? And the faster you go, the worse it gets. I'm spending 3X what the original part cost, just so I can run that part legally.

Yeah, I already have the driveshaft loop. I'll just have to try the slicks on and see what I have.

JESTER....can't I just unbolt the backing plate and slide the new studs on that way??

Studs have to be pressed in. The old ones have to be pressed out as well. I removed my axles, pounded them out with a sledge hammer and took the new studs with axles to a machine shop. They pressed them right in. I just got open ended lugs with really long studs. The tech inspector can glance them over.

On a final note, most local hill billy tracks don't even check your studs. I've seen guys running 4 lugs with a five lug axle!! If it looks like a street car, you're probably ok. If it looks like it's going to pull a 4' wheel stand, they might check your lugs.

I know they are press in type but I've found a creative way to "press" them in myself..... without removing the axles.
I slide the stud in from the back as far as it will go and then I thread a lug nut on the stud and tighten it as far as it will go which forces the stud to seat the rest of the way. I did this once when one of my studs was stripped. I'm confident I can do the same trick with the new 3 inch studs......pretty confident that is...LOL
I'll let you know in a few days.

You can press them in with an old lug nut, but flip the nut over so the flat side hits the axle flange, not the tapered side.

3" should go in there without taking them off, but you'll have to fiddle with them to get them in the right spot.
