Default ring size on stock pistons

What is the ring size on a stock 92 302 piston? I bought the speed pro file fit and they are ok on the 1st and 2nd ring but the oil ring is too loose. the only sizes shown in the summit book are 1/8th or 3/16's for the oil ring.(3/16) would be smaller right? And is it normal to have to file fit 45 thousandths off the rings? One more thing, is it a must to use a ring expander to get the rings on? I read a article in one of our favorite mustang mags were they said it is a must? Can't I just thread them around the piston?

no, 1/8th would be smaller. 1/8 = 2/16. there is 1/16" difference.

AS nastyyn8 said above the 1/8 is smaller.

You don't NEED a ring expander to install them, it just makes it easier. I personally don't use one. I thread them.

Now, you have to be very careful, cause the rings are very hard and brittle and will break easily. Also, don't nick or scratch the piston as you're installing them.

Take your time filing them. It is very easy to file too much off.

thanks for the info, I'll get on the horn and re-order new rings again. I'll also try to get a set that doesn't require so much filing.

ols0051 just Curious, did a machine shop do the block for you? Or did you do it your self? I have an extra block and was thinking about trying to rebuild it my self.

I guess the rings are metric.1.5mm,1.5mm and 4mm? surfsup. I got the shortblock used with 80k mi on it. We took it apart, cleaned it, and run a rabbit turd hone thru it. Got all these fancy measuring tools from a friend, all checked out perfect. It's fun because it's the first one for me, but without experienced help I would have just bought one from a place like DSS.

Rabbit turd hone? LMAO Make sure you clean that stuff outta there!

I'm running Total Seal rings, haven't found better ones out there. If you're planning on running N2O alot, leave a little extra end gap. The nitrous heat expands the rings, and there goes your end gap!

I called summit and they say they are metric. But still waiting for them as they are on back order. They are not file fit. I wanted file fit rings because the plan is to use nitrous. But I also wasn't going to spray it until it was running perfectly. And as the summers seem to just fly bye it could be next year for that as slow as this thing is coming together. And next winter I was going to buy a new crank, rods, and pistons. What is the difference between file fit and non file fit? The non files just are made a spec right? or wrong? If I decide to open the gap up a bit I can right?
