Default Please help - Long. Car troubles.

Yesterday, I was drive home, car was running fine when all of a sudden my car starts to sputter really bad and eventually stall. I tried to restart the engine with no luck. It seemed like the engine wasn't getting enough fuel to start and stay running.

I let the car sit for 30 minutes and tried to restart the engine but this time the car would run for 2-4 seconds then stall. Next, I tried to prime the fuel system by turning the key on and off several time before starting the engine and it worked. The engine ran for about 30-45 seconds before it stalled only this time I watched my fuel pressure gauge while the engine was running and the pressure slowly dropped from 33lbs to 5lbs before it stalled.

I let the car sit for another ten minutes and reprimed to fuel system again before starting. This time I was able to drive the car for 15-20 minutes before it stalled again. I barely made it home that time.

Can someone explain this to me? Any recommendations on what to check? I'm beginning to think that it's my fuel pump going bad.

Thanks for the reply all. I'm swapping out the fuel pump tomorrow morning. Hope this cures the problem.

While your down there, it wouldn't hurt to throw in a new fuel filter as well. they also can prevent good pressure.

Good point! A lot of times when a pump goes bad, it'll fill the filter up with crud too, so it's cheap insurance while your down there.

Boy, does THAT sound familiar! "Hey, while you're down there..."

The filter will/can cause the pump to go bad if it is clogged. The pump pushing against the restriction of the clogged filter, overheats the pump and burns it out.

Do yourself a favor and change the filter too.
