Default Taurus Electric Fan keeps shutting off.

I recently have a Spal "16 electric fan installed on my car until a few days ago when a foreign object flew between the fan guard and ripped all of the blades off the fan.

For a temperary fix, I went to the junkyard and pulled an electric fan from a taurus 3.0 v6 engine. After installing the fan, it will only run for a few minutes before shutting off. What's the deal? My previous Spal "16 fan would run constantly until I shut it off with the toggle switch.

I used the factory harness plug from the ford taurus and just spliced the wire on the plug and connected them directly to the wires that run to my toggle switch.

What gives? Why does the fan only run for a few minutes before shutting off? Please help.

The only relay I have is a built into the toggle switch, and its a 50amp.

Also I just check my wiring, it seems as thought when I turn the fan on, after 30-45 seconds the ground wire gets so hot that I can barely touch it. What does this mean? Do I need to go with a bigger wire?

Also I notice that the ground (black) wire runs from my toggle switch to a fusable link on the positive side of the soleniod.

And the ground (black) wire that actually connects to the motor runs to the frame and is ground there also. Both black wire get really hot when I turn the fan on.

The black wire you use for the ground, should be as big if not a little bigger then the one that comes out of the factory harness for the taurus fan. If you used some kind of connecters for the connections vs not using soder....check to make sure all of those are tight. I just had mine quit two weeks ago and a bad connection (my fault) smoked the connecter.

When the ground wires get that hot, that is a sign that the wire is too small.

Thanks,

I'll change my existing wires out for a larger gauge. The connector I used for the fan motor is a 3-wire plug that came from the actual wiring harness of the taurus, I think that the 3-wires are 10 gauge or thicker. The existing wires for my toggle switch are noticably smaller, maybe 12 or 14 gauge. I will change them out so the everything is the same gauge.

Thanks for your help.

That relay is not large enough. You need a 75 amp relay.
I have a taurus fan and bought a boush 75amp relay.

You can get the relay from here: www.bpg-inc.com
The part number is: 0 332 002 156
Here is the website that I used to wire my fan up. I don't have the fan controller though. Hope this helps: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...an/index.shtml

These taurus fan draw a lot of current at initial start up which is why a big relay and upgraded alternator is recommended.

Here is some help to guide you through that BPG website because it's a little confusing.

Enter the website from the indroduction page, then click on "products" at the top of the page, then click the "bosh" link(3rd one down) and then click on "power relays" under the products.
You will find the part number listed on the left hand side.

well, If I had found this I probably would have done it the way the article shows it. Instead, I ran one of the Dc Controllers that one of our boys on here recommended. Nice piece so far. It claims that it does not require the alternator upgrade, although I upgraded mine anyhow.

Yeah, I would like to have a DC controller but at the time I didn't have the cash for it so I just use a toggle switch and switch the fan on/off accordingly. It works ok. I just always have to keep an eye on the temp. gauge all the time.

Are you using the freewheeling diode that the artical recommended to use ?

No I am not using the diode, my understanding is that the controller I am using takes care of that.
