Default aod trans? od isn't engaging

I think my car doesn't go into o/d, the best gas milage I 've gotten without a heavy foot is 12.5mpg. My cruising rpm at 75mph is about 2800-3000rpm with a 245-45-17 tire. And it just feels like never shifts. Every other gear is fine though. I'll go from d to o/d and thers no change in rpm or speed. The fluid is clean and smells good. Any thoughts? What is the normal cruise rpm with a stock aod and engine?

You didn't say what your rear end gears were. I am assuming stock 2.73's or 3.08's. With that tire and a 2.73 gear, you should be turning about 1800 at 75 mph. With a 3.08 gear, you should be turning 2000 RPM at 75. Then again, you have different tires than stock too. So just go for ball park figures here since your speedometer is off a little too. As far as not going into od, check your tv cable. You can do a search on this site for it, as there have been several threads about it. I am not much of an automatic guy, I like changing gears on my own. It's too much fun.

If your car is turning 2700 at 75, it has 2.73's in it. If it is turning 3000 at 75, your car has 3.08's in it.

Try this one

More info

To add to my earlier post, the rpm figures I gave you would be when the car is in overdrive. Just thought I'd clarify that.

The TV cable adjustment will move the shift points up and down depending on position.

When the cable is too loose the tranmission will slip and shift quickly. Usually burns the transmission up in no time. When the cable is too tight the shift points are higher and firmer.

You need to read in the shop manual how to adjust it correctly. Sorry, I don't have one here.

BUT....I don't think you're going to find that the O/D isn't coming in because of the TV cable. Even with the cable out of adjustment it should come in too soon or too late.

Sounds like an internal problem to me.
