Humming Sound Around the Tailend?
While my 86 is running & sitting idle, I hear a humming sound/noise around the tailend of the car. It is kinda annoying and I'm wondering, "What does that sound means?"
Anyone that can help me out, please do so. I want my 86 running perfectly. Even though I just bought her on last Sat and I have the rest of my living days to work on her; I want her to be functioning as she suppose to. So, being that I hear this around the tailend (gas tank area) I really want to know wassup. Don't wanna be riding out and my joint blow up on me, lol... I laugh but I'm serious! Help me out stangers... |

Fuel pump? Sounds like a turbine engine on a helicopter or an airplane?

Re: Humming Sound Around the Tailend?
Fuel pump, ok. So, what kinda problem will I run into if I wait a while to change it out? Will it cause any problems? Will it hurt the performance of the car? More importantly, I ain't trying to blow myself up, lol...

But no, it doesn't sound like a helicopter; it's just a humming or buzzing type sound. Hope we're talking bout the same thing. I wanna get small but needed issues out of the way so I can start with my modifications. Thanks again for any/everybody's imput.

Re: Humming Sound Around the Tailend?
Yo, that's what its supposed to sound like. With the car off, put the key into the ignition and click it into the ON position. You'll hear the fuel pump buzz/hum for a second. The sound is continuous while running. If ever in the future your car stops running and you don't hear that sound, you know you've got a fuel delivery problem. Congrats on the new project.

Re: Humming Sound Around the Tailend?
Welcome to the wonderful world of fuel injection! Get used to it pal. If it's REALLY loud, fuel pump might be heading south, or all of the insulation in your tank straps is "squished" out.
Ask 82GT about fuel pump noise, then come listen to mine! Oh wait, that's right. Mine doesn't make that noise anymore.

Re: Humming Sound Around the Tailend?
If it's pretty loud or distinct, then I bet your pump is on it's way out. Some pumps are just plain noisy, though. Stick your ear up to the filler door and listen to the pump running while the engine is running. Is this the same sound you hear? Another thing is, your fuel pump is designed to come on when the key is turned on. It should run for about two seconds. This is priming the fuel lines. So sit in your car, turn the key on and listen for the pump to come on. If it primes for much more than 2-3 seconds, I'd be thinking about a new pump in the future. Especially if you count it again a week or two later and 2-3 seconds turns into 3-5 seconds.

Re: Humming Sound Around the Tailend?
if you need a new one, I was happy with the msd fuel pump. Took a couple of hours to replace and it came with all that you need
