Default fuel delivery question...

...so i got my 351 block, and i got my fox body thats it goin into, i got a basic idea of what all i will need for now, i'm probably missing some little things, but i'll get them as i go into puttin this all together. so onto the question. how do i need to set up my fuel delivery system? my dad thinks that the in-tank pump i have will pump too much fuel into the carb. and will i need to redo all the fuel lines and that good stuff when i do this? also, would it just be better if i get a mechanical pump for it, and just run that? and if so, what do i do with the in-tank one i have now? i'm clueless to fuel delivery right now. thanks for any help guys

Are you planning on running a Carb, or Fuelie motor? That's gonna decide what we do with the fuel system.

Carbs operate from 5-10 PSI, and Fuelie motors run anywhere from 30-55 PSI.

We'll go from there.....

"Brake Specific Fuel Consumption" It takes "X" amount of fuel to make "X" amount of horesepower. It's all physics.

In my opinion you got some fuel system issues. In tank is TOO much pressure, so right there you have to figure out how to get the fuel out of the tank. Granetelli pickup, old school (85 or earlier) pickup....

Stay the hell away from the mechanical pumps. Here again, just my opinion, but the "pulse" they give will make you crazy.

Here's what I would do:
Decent pickup out of the tank.
GOOD Filter, Fram HG-1 comes to mind. FILTER BEFORE PUMP!!!!!
Holley BLUE at least, might want to got with BLACK for the windsor.
Get the fuel to the front via no less than 3/8" line (hard line or braided, your call!)
REGULATOR!!!! Holley makes about the best for what you're up to. Summit's version is no more than rebuilt Holley, so you can save a couple bucks there.
Up to the carb!!!

If it was me, there wouldn't be ANY fuel line smaller than -6AN on the car, ANYWHERE! -8AN would be better.

Hope this helps bro!

would it be possible to put a regulator on the pump that is in there? or is that a bad idea?

Holley makes a regulator to use the in tank pump with a carburetor. I don't suppose it's a bad idea. I would just be more comfortable using stuff that is made for a carburetor. It is not a hard thing to do to make your own pickup. See pic. I don't see anything wrong with mechanical pumps. Like jester said, they will drive you crazy sometimes, though. The thing I have against them is when the car sits awhile, it takes several cranks to get her started up again. I would just get the Holley blue label pump, it'll do what you need. But you HAVE to use a regulator with it. When you buy the pump, it comes with a regulator anyway.

I just recently had the same problem, and this is what i did:
I dropped the tank, and got rid of the pump in there. I connected a piece of 3/8" rubber fuel line where the pump was. (make sure it goes as far down as the part for the pump). I put the tank back up, put an in line filter in, bolted the pump right to the piece where your old fuel filter probably will be, and ran my line (i used a 3'8" rubber line) along the bottom of the car, right to the carb. Works great no problems. took all of about an hour and a half.

I'm with you on modifying the sump, but a 351 ain't gonna be happy with 3/8" fuel line.

new question, same subject. would 80gph be enough for the windsor? or would i need more? and do i need a regulator with a mechanical pump?

How wild is your 351 built? If it is mild, the mechanical pump is fine without a regulator. I still suggest a holley blue and a regulator. You'll be happier you did.

60 over on the block, 11:1 compression(KB pistons), 512/512:292/292 comp cam, TFS twisted wedge heads(stage 2) complete valve job. edelborck air gap, holley 750cfm carb, mac shorties, o/r x-pipe, mac cat-back(all 2 1/2in to 3 in tails). i'm not sure if that would be mild or what...lol but i'm most likely goin with the mechanical pump.

With that list of mods, that 80gph WILL NOT be enough!
This is what I did with my 351w:

Sumped the fuel tank
Holley blue pump(110gph) and regulator
-8AN hose from sump to regulator
-6AN hose from regulator to 750 carb.

If I would change anything, and I know JESTER is going to disagree wit this, but I would go with a Mallory electric pump instead of the Holley blue. The noise of the Holley pump will drive you INSANE!!!

Also, if you decide to run all new fuel lines, go with ALL AN hose from back to front. Forget using aluminum hardline unless you have a bender or lots of patience.......which I DO NOT!
I started running hardline.....went to make my first bend and it kinked!!! I said #@!**^ this and ordered 20ft. of -8AN hose and 6ft. of -6AN hose...........and had JESTER install my hose ends

You're gonna starve that thing with a stock type mechanical pump. I hope you got a big radiator and a good fan for that .060 over block. With that much compression and .060 over, it'll heat up good.

Yep, Both these guys are right!!!!

82GT said I'd disagree, and I'm gonna. If you're gonna buy a Mallory pump, just give ME the money instead. JUNK Hell, they can't even build an ignition system, let alone a fuel system. It's OK I got my buddy headed in the right direction with his Holley pump. And when that summa beeotch runs an 11.90 this summer, he's gonna say "What noise???" hehehehe

And 80 GPH ain't gonna cut it. That dog won't hunt!

IEC is also right, that motor is gonna be LOOOKIN for fuel if you put a mechanical pump on her. Like I said before, I'm no fan of mechanicals anyways.

Bite the bullet now, spend the money. I know that sucks, I have to talk MYSELF into doing it the RIGHT way the first time. If not, you're gonna do it again.....

The holley blue will do. What size are the tubes in your radiator?

Well...put it this way. I have 2.5inch flowmasters with single chamber mufflers, I'm turning 3500 rpms on the highway to do 60mph bacause of my 4:10's and I can STILL hear that pump whine!

In all fairness though, I don't have a full interior to help absorb some of the sound but it's still annoying.
Jester knows his stuff about fuel systems, don't get me wrong, but I don't like Holley blue pumps. You can ask anyone, start a thread about it, and everyone will tell you that Holley pumps are loud and Mallory's are MUCH quieter.
Start a thread on this, and some other boards, just to see what everyone else says and then decide for yourself.

Nah, I just have an "idea". I also have an idea that there's something wrong with 82GT's pump, cuz my BG400 ain't even that loud!

We'll get to the bottom of the noise and fix it, and he's gonna be a happy camper.

A blue pump will make it happen, but if it was me, I'd already opt for the black. I have this bad habit of "planning for the future", and it bites me in the ass all the time. Ask anyone around here. Is this the absolute LAST motor we will ever buld for this car? Is there ANY chance that any upgrades we do will require more fuel? Do I feel like laying under this car for 4 hours again to re-run a new fuel system?

If a blue is GOOD TO GO, won't a BLACK be better? This is the bane of my existance. This shyt literally keeps me awake at night, and I hate it, but I love it.

I have a few sayings when it comes to stuff like this. VERY few. But the few I have I stick to religiously. One of them fits in quite nicely here:

"Do it RIGHT, or do it TWICE."
