Tranny Choices
ok i am trying to choose a 5 speed tranny, i am decide between the Z-Spec or a Tremec... what is the better choice??? what are the major differences with them... doesn't the Z-Spec have a better 1st and 5th gear ratio than the stocker and the Tremec??? I know the Tremec can handle more power but right now the car only has 310 HP and 330 ft/lb so that is still under the ratings for both... what do you guys suggest and what do you use???

I love tremecs. I have a 3550 in my 93lx, and a tko II in my 79. In my opinion if you have the money for one buy it. It is good peice of mind to have when dumping the clutch at 6000 rpm w/ traction. Nothing wrong with the t5's though, they just cant handle the abuse.

Yeah, damn those T5's. People like Skyman running his 1.6's and mid 12's on motor with his stock 89 T-5 rated at 260lb/ft. Yeah, they're weak.
Bottom line is, some people don't have any problems with their T5's. Some people have terrible luck with them. Same with the tremecs though. The Tremec is based on a Ford Toploader. They are built by monkey's. Most people with the tremec have to purchase an aftermarket shifter just to change gears. The older tremecs had shitty cases, and in every post I've seen where a Tremec has broken, they won't stand by their product. I don't think the T-5 is the greatest tranny in the world, but I like it better than the Tremec. I guess Tremec thought it was a good design too, since they bought the rights to it. |

Yeah I think I am leaning towards the Z-Spec/Super Duty T5. My tranny has almost 200 thousand HARSH miles on it now and its just begining to get loud. It still shifts fine, but its time for a rebuild. I was hoping for a 6 speed, but I just found out that they don't work in fox bodied cars because they have an all electronic speedo drive (plugs not a cable), so that won't work. The tranny with the closest 5th gear to the T56's 6th gear it the Super Duty Z-Spec.
Top Gear Ratios: Super Duty Zspec = 0.63 T56 = 0.62 My current trany = 0.73 (I have the early style T5 with 2.95 first and 0.73 fifth ratios) That will give me a huge RPM change on the highway won't it??? i know a guy who has a t56 in a 91 stang i will try and ask what problems he had but i do know the first viper ones had a cable drive for the speedo.
