I heard that you have to have the right amount of endplay in the distributor shaft between the oil pump & the distributor. Is this true? I'm building a 351W EFI, I just bought a new ProComp distributor, but I don't have the distributor shaft retainer ring. Is this really that big a deal? How much will the shaft move? thanks

Yep, need at least .060" freeplay in the oil pump shaft to prevent binding. Last thing you want to do is bind the pump up. Also, don't put the pump shaft in without the retainer ring. There's nothing worse than pulling your distributor out and hearing that oil pump shaft 'tink' in the bottom of the oil pan!

If im using a after market dist. I ink the gear up and run it a minute. This tells me where my gear is sitting in relation to the cam gear. Nothng like having a gear burn up in a hundred miles. So far, MSD have been bad for gear placement from the factory. You can measure your old dist for correct gear placement. Thats if it was ok from the factory. Also as above you don't want your oil shaft in a bind, as well as the dist bottoming out.
