New track time....again!
I did a little bit better tonight. I ran a 12.85@102.58
Two weeks ago my best time was 12.98 at around the same mph. Only thing I did different was bumped the timing up a litttle. I'm not sure exactly where it's at now 'cause I forgot my timing light at home. I just turned the dizzy a little bit more. At first I was running 13.01 and 13.02's until I changed the timing and went the 12.85. I still don't understand WHY I can run quicker E.T's and STILL run a 102-103mph. I also had a best 60' time of 1.708 Here is my run: 60'....1.708 330'..5.165 660'..8.102 mph..83.23 990...13.688 mph..102.58 E.T....12.858 I think this is just about dialed in now and I don't look to improve much/any better with this setup. What do you guys think.....do I have a litttle more in it yet or am I about dialed in for this setup?

Re: New track time....again!
How is it that I keep running quicker and quicker with the same mph?
I'm not saying I doubt you but when you start running quicker E.T's, it's hard to think that there is something wrong...you know what I'm saying? I would have thought that bumping the timing would give you more HP if it was set at optimum. I ran .2 quicker with the same MPH? I'm running 5800rpms through the traps. I really think that my cam is about out of steam at that point. It's only rated for 2000-6000 I could change my jetting maybe and see if I can pick up some more mph with that...I'm at 72/80 jets now. Maybe it wants more jetting.

Re: New track time....again!
I think your about tapped out as it sits right now. your time are getting better cause your launching it better and thats what makes difference. mph shows hp and et's show how well you using it.

Re: New track time....again!
So I must be using my HP very well during the run with only 102mph traps. I THINK I can chip another tenth...MAYBE two with some jet changes.
You're right though...I think I am just about maxed with this setup. I think the heads and cam are at their limits.

Simple as that. You need heads but I wouldnt sweat the cam. People run deep 12's with the stock cam in a 302.

Yeah, you're right but my best 60' before Friday night was 1.735. I only improved that time by .027 (1.708) That's not enough to knock .2 off the E.T.

If your combo is maxed out then your heads suck and you should knocked off lots of time when you upgrade.

Re: New track time....again!
I think what everyone is saying is " You are maxed out with those heads". I'm happy for every tenth you get, but the mph won't rise much without more peak hp. just my thoughts. You're doing well though, from my point of view.

Re: New track time....again!
.01 on the little end is worth .1 on the big end, as a general rule. So, there ya go right there.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS tune to your MPH. The ET will follow. If you know that car can go 102, and all of a sudden you're running 99, then it's time to play with jets, and make the car match the air. It's as simple as this bro. That car wants to go 102 MPH, and the ONLY reason the ET's are dropping is because of seat time. Plain and simple. Launching better, obviously. Prolly doing a better burnout, and prolly hitting them shift points a bit better, staying in the groove, keeping her straight, etc etc. It's seat time bro!

Re: New track time....again!
Yeah, I know what you're sayin Bill. The car might want to go a little faster than 102mph and that's what I want to find out.
I would like to see another 3-4mph if it's possible. I have an old time slip from 2 years ago when I took it to the track for the first time with a 103.7mph. trap speed but that was with a tight converter. I'm getting 6% slip, which is considered acceptable, with the new converter so that's prolly where the extra mph went. All in all, I'm very happy with 12.8's with this setup. Bill, I bet you forgot to talk to Dave...didn't you...LOL

Re: New track time....again!
Atleast you ran your setup. I have been saying I am going to run mine all year, but still have not done it. Probably for a few reasons, but mainly cause I am skeered. I dont wanna know how slow it is.

Re: New track time....again!
I could never build a fast car and never take it to the track. The suspense would be too much for me. I only live 20min. from the closest track though..

Re: New track time....again!
hey 82 GT, just curious what heads do you have,... e7's? and how far did you go with the porting and polish job, did you do any bowl work?

Re: New track time....again!
No, they are not E7's but they are D4 heads, which aren't exactly good heads to begin with but all the work was done at a machine shop. There is bowl work done too. I also had the tiny valves that came stock in those and had the 1.94/1.60 stainless valves installed.
In retrospect, I spent waaaaay more money on those heads than what it was worth....but...they are good enough for 12's..which was my original goal.

Re: New track time....again!
He has 351w heads, but I am not sure if they are the same year as his block.
