Default Very strange starter problem.

I am working on a car for a friend.

Its a 1992 coupe. It has a basicly stock carburated 5.0 in it with a 1994 SN T5 tranny and bell housing. I bought a 1994 mustang starter and the starter gear misses the flywheel.

The starter gear goes far enough in but is about a half in inch to the outside of the flywheel.

Anyone know what the problem could be?
