Default GT40 Intakes- Explorer?

I was looking for a GT40 upper and lower intake for my 93GT and when I started searching I came across alot of GT40 Explorer intakes for sale. The looks of these "Explorer" intakes seem alot different (price also) than the regular GT40 tubular design ones. Can someone give me some clues as to why they are both being called GT40 intakes and how does each compare to the other as far as performance?

Thanks again everyone.

Hey squid-

Put it this way. We're big into the Explorer engines over here. We've got a few of them running 12.20's with P heads, and Explorer uppers and lower intakes, along with exhaust, roller rockers, CAI's, 3.73's, and timing. I'd say if you need heads, buy an Explorer engine from the boneyard, you'll get the GT40P heads, and the intakes together for $500, sell the block (unless you want it) for $200, and you'll have for sure, a low 13 second car for $300.00 No reason to blow $900 for heads, and $600 for intake kits to go no faster...

Good luck!

I hear alot of people talking about doing this. What year Explorer would I be looking for? How would I know it has the gt40p heads and intake? Are there any other mods required, or is it a direct bolt on? How much of a power gain can you expect to see? Finally, would this combo handle the needs for the 70mm TB listed in my sig? Thanks

Default Explorer parts

Not sure about the years of Explorers?? But yes, the 70mm T/B would work great with the Explorer heads & intake.

Would the explorer intake and gt40p heads off the explorer be a better performing combo than a cobra intake and the gt40p heads?

I called my local junkyard yesterday and they said they have the explorer upper and lower for 93-97 explorers for $110.00. What performance gains am I looking as compared to stock upper and lower? They don't have the heads, but I can wait on that anyways. They said the heads usually run for $150.00 each. Are the explorer intakes automatically GT-40s? My 92 car is mostly stock.

the explorer lower is almost exactly the same as the GT40 lower, except you will have to drill and tap a hole in the #5 runner for the ACT (air charge temp sensor), no big deal at all. The upper is quite a bit different than the GT40, but is close to a Cobra intake inside. Box stock, it flows just a tad less than the GT40/Cobra intake due to small differences in the upper, but with a little porting, the explorer is a GREAT intake for the money.

Here's a picture of mine so you know what to look for.

It sure is an ugly thing compared to the GT40 and the Cobra

Thanks...I guess I'll go and pick them up this friday when I get paid. As far as performance, would you say that there is a noticeable gain in low end? How is MPG affected, driving style not being changed? The only real performance mods I have are pulleys, black magic fan, K&n box filter, and that's about it. I haven't even advanced the timing yet...Gas is just too expensive...getting about 18 mpg. I have the stock 3.27's in the rear.

The GT40 explorer intakes when replaced improves the mileage and yes it affects the MPG of the car, I guess it's better if this is replaced.
