Nitrous and gear questions
I have a 89 5.0 in my Pinto, with Windsor Jr. heads,1.7 roller rockers,Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and 600 cfm carb pulleys,MSD,125hp shot of nitrous,e-cam with a 4-speed tranny and 9 inch rear.My questions are this do you think my motor is capable of handling a 175hp shot of nitrous and what kind of timing do you guys run with NOS,also which gear do you think would be better for my car 4.11's or 4.56's?THANX==Greg

It would depend on tire size, suspension, and stall. For a radical tire/suspension setup, go 4.11. For a mild setup, try the 3.73's. You don't want to run the quarter with all that gear do you?

I don't think you really want to go over 3.73's.....trust me, there's a big difference between 3.55's and 3.73's. That thing will be screaming at the end of the 1/4. Do you still have a stock fuel system running that 125 shot?

the motor will handle 175 if done properly. as for gear yu will want the tallest gear you can get away with. assuming the motor is stock bottom end 4.11's would be a good choice.3.73's are good for everyday street use , the 4.11's will give you better performance at the track. as for timing, it depends on the motor. i would start at 10 or 12 and work from there. i set mine at 13 and run a hot plug for my 150 shot. the timing should be set at total timing though. not initial. a good start is 34 total. two things i see wrong with your setup are the carb and fuel system. the carb should be at least a 650 for those heads and that much juice. and the holley blue will start to fall short on feeding both the engine and nitrous at mid track and up. a bigger pump or even 2 holley blues would be better and save your motor. you would most likely pick up some time just on the fuel and carb change alone. i that little pinto you should be in the 11's withno problem.

The motor is a stock bottom end,my local nitrous dealer recommended Autolite 27 spark plugs for the 125 shot, would you suggest something else for that and the 175 shot?Which carb would you suggest I go with? What about a Torker 2 intake also?

The motor should easily handle a 175 shot. Just be conservative on the timing, and keep a close eye on the plugs. Maybe spray in just 3rd gear, then immidiately pull a plug.
As far as gear goes, it depends on how fast you are running. I imagine you are going mid-low 12's @ 110 on motor, and 120 plus mph on the hose? On 3.73's and a 26" tall street tire I was past my 5500 rpm shiftlight trapping 123 mph. I had to go to a 28" tall tire to keep from running out of motor at the end of the track. ------------------ 1988 Mustang GT 11.8 @ 123 (7/14/01) 11.5 @ 120 (9/14/01) 1992 BadAzz Wrangler 1993 Explorer See my car at: www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?179 |

I have only taken it to the track once,I launched at 3000 and it bogged down then took off it ran a 12.5,My tires are Hoosier Dot Quicktime 26 X 9.5's,my only other run I made ended with 13.8 because when I hit 2nd she turned and headed for the wall and had to let off.

well, like i said a 650 dp is needed for that setup and a better fuel system. as for plugs, a 27 autolite is a little hot for that much juice. im not an autolite fan though. i like a.c delco r 45 ts. gapped at 35. the intake is gonna be a trial thing. for the most part 302's like the performer rpms especially with some porting and matching. but a good motor will respond well to the torkers with juice but it will want to work in the upper rpms. since that motor should be shifted around 6000 it may work well. work with what you have first and get your current setup to its optimum. only then wil you know what is right for you to buy.
one thing though, since you have a small wheel base car i would spend the money on th rear half of the chassis. especially since its already starting to shoot to the side. and stiffen that thing up. |

What are your trap speeds on motor and on spray? A Pinto is a damn light car so I imagine they would be pretty high.

I have a friend with a pinto, 302 with edlebrock heads, C-4 etc, and a 175 shot.. runs 11.0's at 5000 ft in denver, which is in the 10's at a lower altitude... you'll need a roll bar if you run in the 11's.. and some chassis work done... you might look into the MSD timing retard... that way you can bump it up when you arent on the juice ;-)
