Cam upgrade
If I put a B303 cam in my 93 Cobra, will I have to upgrade the lifters and timing chain or will I be safe with just putting in stiffer valve springs? I am lost and confused on this topic, any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The lifters and timing chain should be replaced if you can, but do not have to be replaced. It won't hurt to run the stock ones.

With your 1.7 rockers, that'll be like 226 duration & .500" lift, with only 112 lsa. You'll trade off a lot of low end, and emissions will be bad.
I'd get something made for the 1.7 rockers. The crane 2031 cobra cam was designed for this application (214/220, 112lsa, .513/.529), and you can get the kit with springs for $205. If you want something a little more aggressive, there's a comp cam extreme grind that would be great... but it'll cost a little more. When you take the front off, you'll probably be surprised at how loose the timing chain is... for $30, a new one is essentially manditory. The lifters might be alright, but it'd really suck if it started tapping on startup. ------------------ '89.5 5L LX, hatch, Medium Canyon Red, 155K Km (No winters), 5sp, 3.08, GT interior, a/c, Alpine CD, K/N, Crane PS91, Walbro 190 LPH, March Pulleys, Mr. Gasket 180 therm (HP balanced), 3 core rad, MarkVIII fan, Variflow controller, Polygraphite front bushings, FMS-5300B springs, 6 KYB's, 73mm Calipers, Maximum Motorsport 4pt chassis brace, Western Motorsport Racing's Sub-frame connectors. get a good timing chain (around $70.00) and reuse the lifters, if upon inspection when removed, they look fine.

Thanks for the info. Emissions isn't really a problem, but I do want a real aggressive sound. Will the Crane 2031 have a more rough sounding idle than the B303 even though it has less duration, because the sound is really what I am looking for. Also, with the added lift of the 2031, will I have to fly cut my pistons? Thanks again.

The 2031 won't sound as loupy, but it'll have more cylinder pressure, and idle better.
If it's really just the sound you want, you could just pull one of the plug wires ;-) (sorry, but someone would've said it). The added lift is good... and you should still have lots of clearance. ------------------ '89.5 5L LX, hatch, Medium Canyon Red, 155K Km (No winters), 5sp, 3.08, GT interior, a/c, Alpine CD, K/N, Crane PS91, Walbro 190 LPH, March Pulleys, Mr. Gasket 180 therm (HP balanced), 3 core rad, MarkVIII fan, Variflow controller, Polygraphite front bushings, FMS-5300B springs, 6 KYB's, 73mm Calipers, Maximum Motorsport 4pt chassis brace, Western Motorsport Racing's Sub-frame connectors. Ok, thanks for the info. I am still a little ways from putting the cam in...there are a few things ahead of it on the list, but do you know the model of the comp extreme grind cam? I couldn't find it in summit.

35-324-8 XE270HR (270/276,218/224,.544",112lsa) It's got VERY aggressive lobes (short adv duration), so you'll have more cylinder pressure than you would with the B cam... and it'll be a little meaner than the crane 2031. Last I checked, they were about $240 for the cam alone. |
