88GT Conv - Whine noise on acceleration, whats it mean?
Hi guys
I bought my 88gt conv recently and have been driving it for about 6k miles now. Its a 5 spd. Whenever I accelerate theres a really loud awkward sounding whine. It happens in 1st 2nd 3rd maybe 4th I dont recall but not in 5th for sure. Whats this whine mean? It only happens when I am accelerating. If I take my foot off the gas pedal it goes away. Any advice/information would be appreciated! Thanks! Andy |

Could be several things, input shaft bearing, pilot shaft bearing, internal trans bearings. Does it do it at idle? with the clutch in? only with the clutch out? I had an input shaft bearing go bad, it would whine only when the clutch was out.

The clutch has to be out and I have to have my foot on the gas, otherwise there is absolutely no whine. Happens in gears 1-4. I can jam the clutch in and it stops.

Dude i been posting about this forever, basicaly what everyone says is correct, mine whines through all grs except 4th, so i come to the conclusion i better buy a rebuild kit 150$, and prepare, becuse usualy it's about to go south.
Especialy if your hard on it, which i have some hard dragstrip runs on mine, but my t-5 shifts good throughout grs, but an input shaft gets play in it, and my t-5 gives a "howling" noise when im decelerating to a stop?, it's very 'annoying' so lemme no what it was, if you ever fix it. good luck ------------------ 90 lx coupe: Mac cold air fenderwell, accel supercoil, advncd ignition,3-core radiatr, FMS alum D/S, Black magic fan, 3.27grs, 3chbr flows. Mine had a whine in it on acceleration and deceleration. When I had the gears changed, I had the axle bearings replaced as well and the noise disappeared. Could be the rear end.

Thats a good point withamc, my dad thinks it's the rearend, but how come it dont whine in 4th? well im gonna try and have them replaced, i see a little oil on the pass side axle, so maybe my bearings are shot?
