Post Time for a cam - which one for my cobo?

All right - I'm getting ready to tear into this thing once again and since I'm going to pull off the headers and intake, I figure it won't be much more work to just put in a better cam. I was thinking E-303, unless I hear some overwhelming response for a different one. I want it to pass smog, so I don't want to go too radical. Take a look at my sig and tell me what you think. Also, aside from the cam and gaskets, is there anything else I should be changing as well? Do you think I can get it all done in a weekend?

Are you going to run the E-303 with the 1.7's? I think thats not going to work with the flattop pistons in the 86GT. Definatly check into that if you plan on keeping the 1.7's. But if you want to pass smog, its a decent cam. I like mine pretty well.

I have a rebuilt block with hypereutectic (or however you spell it) pistons, so I don't think clearance with an E cam is an issue.

The P heads like the E cam, but they also like the Crane 2031, which is made for 1.7's. I really like mine. Idles pretty mean and pulls to 6K easy. Its specs are 214/220 duration at .050 and .513/.529 lift.

If you've got new pistons with reliefs in them, then I'd consider the e-cam with 1.7s. Since (by your sig) you've already got them, then you're that much further ahead. I'm not sure about custom grinds though, so I'll let the others go into that, but the E-cam sounds good to me with your combo.

The E cam (crane 2040) is meant to be used with 1.6 rockers... and even then it's right at 0 overlap at 0.05". Going to the 1.7's could pose emmissions trouble (although properly tuned, it would probably pass).

The crane 2031 is meant for the 1.7's. It doesn't have quite as much intake duration, and it has a 112lsa, so it'll be much easier to pass emissions. It has a broader torque band, and still pulls to the rev limit, so it's a great street cam.

Although you've openned up the exhaust, I think the split duration would still be beneficial, since you're using cats.

You can get the cam kit (with springs etc) for $207 at R&E racing.

That is essentially the same as my combo, and I really like it. I milled 0.030" for 10:1 compression which is nice. Also, the 2031 maintains more cylinder pressure than the E, which should be better if you haven't increased compression.

I had an E cam in my 93 cobra with 1.7's and had no problems. But it also depends on what size valves you are running. As long as you are not using 2.02 valves you should be ok. Anderson now sells a kit to hold the lifters up so you do not have to pull the intake. Saves about 2-4 hours of labor. Hope this helps.

Also since your going to be in there, I would change the timing chain.

Do I need to buy any tools to degree the cam? Also, any websites that have instructions on degreeing the cam?

How about an Anderson Cam? I was going to go with an E cam but they conviced me that their cam is the way to go....and I really dont regret it....give them a call and see what they say....if you want an edge over everyone else I would go with an custom cam or something along those lines...the N-2 cam will pass emissions.
Just an idea

I think that's it. GO ILLINI!!!

I have an E-cam in my '92 and I swear by it, actually its a crane cam with the same specs...anyway, it sounds nasty with the Flowpaths and pulls like hell too!!! I can't wait to hear it with my S-Trim.

Thumbs up

Okay - I did it - I ordered the Crane 2031 and a degreeing kit. It should be in in about a week or so. It doesn't look like it's that difficult to do, then it's off to the Germanson Automotive for a dyno tune.

you do not have to degree it. just line the dots on the timing chain up and stick it in.
