Do I NEED To Convert To Mass Air?
i've kinda droped the turbo idea (too much money for the kit, & 20hrs to install=$$$$)
If i were to add 24lb inj's, TFS TW Heads, TFS Street Intake & TFS #1 cam(221*/225* duration@.050, .499/.510" lift with 1.6 RR) would it still be driveable (eanough for daily driving)? also would i have a piston to valve clearence problem? thanks ------------------ 1988 Mustang GT, T-5 No Smog Pump (Shorty Belt), Dumps At The End Of Stock H-Pipe (Sounds Mean), K&N Air Filter (Stock Air Box, Removed air silendcer), 198.9 rwhp @4200 (235 Motor!!), 285 lbs-ft @2900 (336 Motor!!!). |

I am no expert, but I would have to imagine that your speed density system is pretty near maxed out with the mods you have now. The computer has no way to compensate for more airflow and will not be able to adjust your fuel curve well. Reprogramming the computer would work, but a Mass Air conversion is much easier and cheaper too.
Go for a larger sized MAF unit in anticipation of more performance, or maybe you could score a stock unit real cheap. IIRC you will need a new computer and some other gadgets. ------------------ Frank W 90 5.0 LX coupe Stone stock soon to be daily driver 74 Chevy Laguna Type S-3 305 apart in garage, getting a 454 to put next to it www.chevellepages.com/folingo |

Your speed density system is a hell of a lot more flexible (with some tuning) than most people give credit for. It's become quite the myth that you cannot run heads, or an intake, or a cam, or a supercharger, or this or that on a SD system. That's all it is though, a myth. With proper tuning they can get you well into the 12's, there are people on this board who can testify to that.
You should talk to Trick Flow about possible interference, but that cam looks pretty mild to me, so I really doubt it. Anyway, you'll need an AFPR to adjust fuel pressure so you can trick the SD computer system, but I'd certainly try it with SD first, especially if you are on a budget. As far as your system being streetable, I see no reason why it wouldn't be. The cam isn't wild, so I'd expect you to get around just fine. 88workcar is still running around the board, although it seems he may have maxxed the SD system out. Tough to say, he's an advocate for the SD cars as much as anybody else, and he has the low 12's to prove it can take it. |

I eould say give it a whirl with the SD, the worst that will happen is that you'll have to convert...and it seems as if you were thinking about it anyway priopr to the cam.

i am in the same dilema as you. I am running TFS stage 3 port job, cobra intake with lower ported, heads oringed, 24lbs, 65mm, f cam, 306 block with shot peened and polished rods. the speed density works, but adds a lot of drivability problems. If i sit at a light, the fuel will build up as i take off just because it cannot respond as fast as mass air.
