Question 137k WHAT SHOULD I REPLACE WHEN CHANGING GEARS?

What else has to be changed when I get the gear changed? The car has 137K on it and I am going to 4.10's and adding 5 or 6 lbs of boost. I priced the install kit, speedo gear, ring and pinion and cover at $470 w/out shipping. I would really just like to get a new rear for $700 but I can't. Don't join the Airforce and don't move to Italy if you like your Mustang!!!

Whoa that's kind of high, I got mine INSTALLED for $410, but then again you are overseas...i'd keep shopping around and try and find a cheaper price thou. If you can pick up a 5.0 or something and start calling people who advertise in it. Like I said I had mine done at a shop but I know they replaced ring and pinion and speedo gear and probably cover. If you consider how much you are going to pay to get it installed it might just be cheaper to go with the whole new rear end.

What did they replace? Did you get the bearings and the new gear bolts? The install kit is about $90, the gears are about $190 from Ford, the ground pounder cover is about $135 and 2 speedo gears come to about $25. Do I need the big install kit? How much of this stuff do I actually need? I don't have any problems with the rear. $410 sounds awesome. The only PITA about being over here is that no one has ever set one up before. The labor should be pretty cheap because the dollar is high.

I just did mine and had 128k and ordered the $100 install kit from Summit and got my 4.10 gears and did them myself. The kit had all new bearings, for the axles and all, plus all new seals, shims and bolts plus the rear gasket. It did the job and works great. If you totalling out at about $700 why nor just buy a whole new rear end minus the axles from Ford for that? Brande new everything, and you can get them in various gear ratios including 4.10.

When I had my gears put in (at like 160k miles) all I had was synthetic gear oil, and the gear kit from Ford. It had the proper shims, pinion nut, etc.. The only thing I would suggest is have a good look at the differential, make sure its in good order, otherwise get it rebuilt. In CDN$ I had my gears and subframes installed for $500 (including the price of buying them).
