Being a Chevy guy you probably don't have the proper tools...you need to have a FORD tool, sometimes referred to as a hammer. lol

Anyways, usually the transmission will seat up against the bell housing by simply wrestling it up there. But, I have also done the exact same thing you described with carefully pulling it into place by tightening 4 fasteners. It works, just need to be careful.

Sounds like you're bleeding blue now...
