Question Used gears safe or not?!?!

I've heard so many different opinions, does anybody know if it's really safe to run used ring & pinion gears?(assuming they haven't been abused) Some people say that because they have their unique wear marks they should never be used again unless you can install them exactly the way they came out which is impossible. Others say they've installed used gears with no problems..? Would the savings be worth it? Does anybody have the final answer? Thanks a lot!

Do it right the first time gears are a pain to install and why go through it twice just to save a $100 or less. Also odds are the old gears will wine, save your money on other mods but spend the money here you will appreciate it in the long run.

Gears have to be the worst install project known to man. It's not worth saving 50 bucks on the gears if you have to reinstall them a year later. No matter what condition they are in, I wouldn't do it.

I wouldn't get used gears, either. Like said above, unless you can set them up exactly like they were, you're prone to gear whine. If you can turn your stereo up loud enough to overcome that, go for it. Save yourself some pain in the long run and get a set that comes with all the installation parts. People that say they've had no problems are either lucky or haven't checked the gear mesh...or have really loud stereos. Good luck.

Here's my two cents on this one. There's actually nothing wrong with used gears as long as the bearing diameters aren't scored, and the wear pattern is good. just make sure they are a set. (not a ring out of one set and a pinion out of another set, even if they are the same ratio as they wear together)I've had a couple Mustangs with 9" rears and I also used to mud drag a '78 Bronco with a 9" rear, so I usually had a few sets of gears in different ratios laying around. Put lots of gears in different vehicles and never had a problem.
