![]() I am about to do a complete tuneup on my car(oil, fuel filter, pcv, wires, cap and rotor), one of my dumps had fallen off and sometime around then my car seemed to have a clicking sound coming through the exhaust, it was no longer smooth like it used to be. I figured it was becuase of the dump, today I got a new one welded on and it still does it, I also noticed that the smoke coming out was black(maybe it's black because it's in need of an oil change?).... my question is what the heck is wrong with my car, why is it making this funny ticking sound and have a good amount of black smoke... it has a miss from idle to 2000 rpms, would this be causing the noise+black smoke? Is there something major wrong with it? I don't want to do a complete tuneup on it if the engine is dying or something....

![]() Ok I just had a friend look at it and he said the smoke looked grey to him not black, is it normal to have some grey smoke come out the exhaust when you step on it.

![]() Grey smoke is most likely actually white smoke, and everybody knows what that means.
A ticking along with white smoke generally indicates a blown head gasket. ![]() You should check for bubbles in your coolant while the car is running. If you've got 'em you've got a bad head gasket. |

![]() Checking for bubbles in the coolant, you mean open the radiator cap and look for bubbles? I have a near stock engine, I thought you had to be running boost or n20 or something to blow a head gasket.... would that explain my temp running pretty high and flucuating a lot too? How much does it cost to get fixed? Also would that mean I have other problems too? Sorry for all the questions, thanks for the reply unit.

![]() Just another point of view,The ticking could be a header gasket at the head & if it's only light smoke at WOT it could be just a little blow by from wear on a engine with a few miles on it but the other replies were a correct method of diagnosis.check the rad or if your adding coolant it's probably the HG.
also check the plugs sometimes one will have residue on it to tell which cyl is leaking & turn the car over with the plugs out.if it's a bad leak, antifreeze may pump out of bad cyl.if your or a friend have a compression tester run a test. A head gasket isn't a bad job if this isn't your daily driver a downtime isn't a issue. BTW how many miles does it have. |

![]() It has 90k miles... that's the problem, it's is a daily driver and can't afford to have downtime.... although spring break is in a week and I have nothing to do all week.... I was thinking it might be a header leak too.. I think i'm gonna go to autozone and get a compression checker....

![]() the ticking could be a cat converter falling apart unless you have got rid of them already. I wouldnt automatically assume that it is the worst possible thing that could go wrong(I do it too). most likely is is just something simple. and the stock guages are likley to fluctuate a bit just because they are fairly inaccurate.
