The worst is when you're not powershifting, and you have already let the clutch out a little before you hit the next gear...grind-grind-smack as the shifter gets shoved out of gear back into your hand.

I fall in the same boat as cyberstang50. I miss 2-3 beacause I let the clutch out too early. Also, I hate missing it when people are around for the same exact reason. I am running 2 chamber flowmasters with turn downs. The exit is around the door jamb. LOUD!! Just the way I like it.

believe it or not, when i was racing at Cecil county, i had the 3-4 problem. the 2-3 i didnt miss once. i have the Hurst. also i wasnt powershifting. maybe thats why? why do you powershift on a stock or even a Tremec? i dont understand why drag racers do that unless it is with a Jerico. can someone explain this to me?

Can't explain why, but 1-2 is the only shift I've EVER missed on BOTH my T-5 and Tremec!

srv1, why not powershift, it's worth a couple of tenths and you don't need a jerico to do it, you do know what powershifting is right?
And wow, another moldy oldie dug up on this forum.

Red, i was just asking why you would do it. i dont drag race enough too see the benefits of powershifting or not to powershift. i personally dont see how you would really benefit by powershifting a T5 or a Tremec since neither (that i know of) are designed to shift without some type of clutch. i mean if it does knock a couple tenths off, i guess it is worth it, but wouldnt that just empty your wallet fast? i mean i see people do it all the time and i see the same people replacing thier trannys all the time. heck i even tried it when i first got my Stang. Lets just say it was the first and last time i did that! Clue me in, maybe i am missing something?

oh, and yes i know what powershifting is. it is fun when it is not yours! hehehe

Question

Red, i just read the other post. maybe i am wrong. all these years i thought "powershifting" was shifting without the clutch and matching the speed of the gears with the engine. i always knew it as that. have been wrong all these years? anyone?

It is my understanding that powershifting is shifting without pulling your foot off the gas. Basically put the gas pedal to the floor and then shift through the gears (using the clutch) as needed!

Default My understanging of power and speed shifting

The way i understand power shifting and speed shifting is this.

Speedshifting is when you fully depress the clutch and back off the throttle but still hit the next gear as fast as possible. This is what i do because it won't hurt my t-5 that much.

Powershifting is depressing the clutch very slightly or not at all to get it into and out of gear, and holding the gas to the floor while doing so. This will eventually break something in the tranny though.

This is my understanding of it and someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Exclamation Gear Shifts

I do not know about you all,but to me a blind man could find second, but I am in total agreement about 2-3,I have tried it with a number of shifters, and some just glided right in,some did not,I know this will sound crazy but I could find 3rd easier with the stock shifter than I could with my Hurst until I removed the load springs.

My vote for sure is for 2-3 shift as hardest to hit.

Not an issue with a Jerico DR4 and Long Verti-gate shifter!!!

Seriously though... to play along... when I ran a T-5 and later a Tremec 3550... definitely the 2-3 shift!

I leave my foot planted to the floorboard and pull gears without even worrying about missing a gear with the Jerico... It's not a clutchless unit, so I still have to pedal the clutch... it just slips right into the next gear... straight back from 1st, straight forward for 3rd, and straight back again for 4th... no darn H-pattern to contend with. Lovin' it!
