Default Re: brakes

Simi Stang hit the nail on the head. Disk brakes are designed to drag a little. Way back when Disk brakes started appearing on production vehicles on a regular basis, there was a belief among drag racers that disk brakes would slow you considerably so drum brakes were the way to go for fast cars. Drum brakes have springs that pull the shoes back when pedal pressure is absent. Disks don't have this luxury and you get a constant drag. Some cars are worse than others but basically, you're stuck with it.
I can still remember a harrowing ride in a 1970 Dodge Dart 340-6 pack with factory drum brakes all around that ended a 130 mph run with a stab of the brakes and a lot of praying we'd hit something soft when we ran out of road. The brakes kinda hinted that they were working but faded so fast that ole Virgil had all of his might mashing the brakes and we were pretty much coasting to a stop after about 100 feet. I'll take dragging disk brakes every time and just have to make up for it with more horsepower inducing goodies.
