Default Not sure what to do.....

I have a 89 GT with a AOD, there is a very loud winning noise, kinda sounds like there is a blower on it. When I rev the engine up the sound increase. I cant tell if its coming from the engine or tanny. I talked to a tanny guy on the phone and he thinks it might be the tany pump not getting oil. I just got done changing the tanny filter and it still makes the noise. there was very small amounts of metal flakes in the oil witch is common. and the oil did need to be changed. The car is strong when I get on it. I'm lost as to where to go from here. any input is welcome. if you know of someone I can talk to send me there info I would appreciate it.

thanks, Ron

Is this car new to you? The first thing that came to my mind was a timing gearset was on the car and making the whine.

When you rev the engine does the speed of the whine get faster? Check your power steering fluid. Probably not it but those things get loud when they're low on fluid also not sure if you still have your smog pump but that thing maybe getting ready to go.

I would have guess power steering too, but in that case, timing gears could be, is the alternator bearings shot? i would get under the car and listen for it there. If the trans fluid was nasty could be a tranny issue.. Could be the turbines in the torque converter.. without hearing it, its hard to tell...

take the alternator belt off andf start the car.. take all the belts off for a quick sec. if it stops then there you go.. its one of the accessories, if it doesn't then its either timing set, or trans.

I had a nasty atf leak. I lost most of the fluid in my AOD to the point where it would go into neutral when I stopped the car at a light and I would need to rev it up to pump whatever fluid was left through the system to get it to jump back into gear and move. Throughout this whole process, not a sound.

I am guessing it is the engine and not the transmission. You said it increases with engine rpm? Is that in neutral? In neutral it's only the flexplate and the torque converter in motion. I cannot imagine a TC making whining noises. Check the following

1. The clutch fan for the radiator. This has been known to rub the fan shroud and make that exact noise.
2. Remove the dust shield at the bottom of the transmission bellhousing and look to see if the TC has paint stripped off. Check the teeth on the flexplate. Occasionally starters loosen up and touch. That would be rpm dependant and make a helluva lot of noise.
3. Tighen the header bolts and at the collector to h-pipe bolts. Loose exhaust makes all kinds of ticking and whining noises.
4. Pop the distributor cap off and look at the underside. I once had a rotor rub the cap and make a whining sound. If you feel motivated and you dont mind setting the timing, yank the distributor and check the distributor gear. You might want to matchmark the rotor and dist body so you have a good idea where to put it back.
5. Give it an oilchange and overfill it a bit. See if the sound goes away or changes tone. If this is it, you are basically screwed because it is something inside the motor. Timing chain sounds good to me. At least that's easy to fix.

If it is speed dependant, it might be your gears. Pulling the axle cover might not necessarily show anything since failing gears usually look just like new gears anyway. Pull off the driveshaft and put a pan under the tailshaft to catch the ATF that will leak out and then start it and "get her up to 50 or 60 on the speedo". This will rule out/in the rear end definitively. Neutral whining rules out the AOD. Removing the accessory belt rules out the acessories and the clutchfan. Well, thats all I can think of. If you had PS, I would totally suspect that.

good luck and keep us posted!
