2nd AOD dead...Lentech or T-5 conv.???
But atleast it lasted until I got my income taxes back. I've been looking at the Lentech AODs for awhile but interested in maybe a used T-5 swap if I could get it for around the same or cheaper. I just need some feedback and suggestions. Gotta get something done ASAP. Thanks

A t-5 swap is cheaper than a lentech. What do u like? Automatics or standard shifts? Should be an easy decision, get what you prefer to drive. Most people like sticks, but not me, that shifting crap is for the birds, ill stick with the auto.

Man that sux! I don't know about the lentech aods, so I really can't say on that one. A C-4 would be alot cheaper. Around here you can convert over to a used t-5 for $1k, parts and labor. Good luck.

As MACH 1 said, it is up to you.
Personally I will be changing eventually simply because I feel it is more fun, and it will be time for a change Good luck with your choice! If I could get it converted for around $1000 with a used T-5 then that will be my definite route.
In my opinion I could be happy with either or. But I do think 5-speeeds are alot more fun. Thanks ------------------ 1988 Mustang GT |

From what I see/read in the users rides section, your car seems like it fits in the 12-14 sec. daily driver segment. As such, unless you have intentions of turning your car into an 11 second (500+ hp) or quicker weekend warrior, I see no reason to shell out the $2,500 + for a full- boogie Lentech AOD.
In 500+ hp applications, I always suggest going with a built automatic because of its reliability and consistency over the T5 at these power levels. In your case, I'd say choose whichever one is going to make you the most happy while driving the car. FYI, I know that an AOD-to-T5 conversion is going to require some "extra stuff" such as clutch, shifter, and so on. Lentech makes an AOD capable of handling up to 450hp. I think the price is fairly resonable too. This is, IMHO, the easiest option since you simply remove the one AOD and install the Lentech. 2 things, 1) I blew up a GER "BUILT" autmatic, with everyoption possible on it after 6000 miles of freeway driving. #2) I am buying the street terminator lockup Lentech which has a hp rating of 700 hp not 400..the cheapest one they make handles 600hp dyno proven.

My GER has about 17,000 miles on it, mostly hard driven street miles, and about 30 passes down the quarter, and it has not given me any problems. Were you using the GER converter? The converter is junk, go with a stallion.

I've heard a lot of things like what Mach is saying...that GER's trannys aren't bad...it's their converters are crap. That being said I don't own one so that's all second and third hand info. If it were me, I'd go with the Lentech. I just hate the idea of cutting up my car to install an extra pedal and all. But hey, that's me.

You dont have to cut anything up to convert to a 5 speed. Just change the pedal assembly (pain in the *** ), and run a clutch cable (the holes are already there). I think u have to swap the speedo. cable to a different hole, then use that hole for the clutch cable.

I did the aod to t-5 swap last year. I was swinging a motor and the trannyat the same time though. You can reuse the tranny mount and crossmember they are exact. I had to trim the floorboard about a half inch in the back though. Myself and a freind put the clutch pedal and bracket in, in a sat. morning. I suggest going to a salvage yard and finding a wrecked straight shift mustang. It doesnt matter as far as 4cyl, 6cyl, or V-8 the bracket and pedal assembly will be the same. I give $20 dollars for it all at a local yard. The brake pedal should come with it as well beause it is bent to the righr slightly to accomadate for the clutch pedal. Like Mach 1 said you have to move the speedo cable and use it for the clutch cable. I highly suggest going with an aftermarket adjustable quadrant. With a little common sense and car knowledge you can do the swap yourself, But if your unsure leave it to a pro. The biggest problem I had was getting the factory shifter for the auto out. THAT SUCKED. You do have to drop the steering column but with a friend it isnt to bad.
Good luck and psssstt, The 5spd. makes the car alot more fun to drive. Pony power forever |

Oh I forgot, If you buy a used T-5 (buyer Beware) I spent $500 on a used tranny only to find out it needed lower bearings. I went back to the guy I purchased it from and naturally his only reply was "I don't what your talkin' about". On the good side Hanlon Motorsports make a GREAT rebuild kit for about $250 bucks. Thier ad is in just about all mustang mags.
