Most of the guys I race with are running custom cams...including myself. In the world of Trophy Stock, where we're limited to shorty headers and unported heads, the top dogs are in the elevens with a class record of 11.60@115 at 3200#. The T/S crowd will probably go even faster/quicker this year. To turn those numbers at that weight, you're looking at about 325rwhp and 350ft-lbs on the chassis dyno. As far as piston to valve goes, it all depends on what you do with the heads. We're limited to .500" lift with the cam but most folks are milling the heads pretty radically to pump the compression up. Most of them have the compression above 10.5:1, probably even some above 13:1.

Are there any cam companies in particular that most people seem to go to. I guess p/v clearance isn't a big question.
I am thinking of getting a DSS 306 Bullet kit and I can get the pistons fly cut for whatever. I am going to build a motor over May/June/July. The closest FFW ever comes is to Cordova (I live in Minneapolis) so that is probably the only one I'll make it to this year-in Sept. But I hope to be competitive.

I'd have to say that the most popular are FTI, Comp Cams, Cam Motion, Bennet and Anderson. Off-the-shelfs don't seem to do the trick; you've got to start looking at custom lobe profiles to really get the most out of the combinations.

I'll be running all the FFW events this year...look me up at Cordova.

Well I'm running the P's all with no port work. The intake and heads are box stock. I'm running a b-cam, with 1.72rr. Which makes it almost an F cam. All my runs were on BFG drag radials. With slicks I could probably shave a couple more tenths. More gear probably a couple more. So that makes it solid mid 12's if that's what you want. But mine's my daily driver. I know one of the guys that runs in factory stock. He runs the P's but he's got a 4.30 gear so I guess it helps because his runs faster than mine without the cam. But it all comes down to suspension that I don't have. The motor's there but not everything else I need for the best ET. Ohh yeah I'm running a DSS probullet 306 with flat tops which is good for about 10:1 compression. Heads aren't milled either. I'm thinking of pulling it apart and doing some port work. But I don't know at this point. Ohh well I'm starting to ramble on.

ok, sorry if this gets long, but i run a wolverine 1087(222/232dur, .510/.534lift) cam with my p heads, and i dont have everything sorted out, but so far i have trapped 105 and put 267hp and 293ft-lbs. to the wheels before i put an off road pipe on. i did some work on my heads, but it was minimal at best. my intake is mismatched, so i will make more power after i fix that prob. a friend of mine runs one of the crane cams, a 2031(his name on here is quick89gt if you wanna double check that, im not positive)with his P heads and he has only been able to trap 100mph, but obviously there are differences in our combos that make up for that. to squeeze every last ounce of power out of any combo, i feel a custom cam and experimentation is the only way to go. nick

Ok...Thanks for the reply's BTW...I have trouble building my cars sometimes because I always seem to get bigger and bigger with stuff when I am this deep. This year, I will be building the car to T/S specs-strictly-SO, that way I can limit myself...Which also means I need to stay under .500 lift. I have spoken with some other stock class racers in the past, and just to be sure that I am on the right track with cam specs...It looks like I will need to be running about 240-255 @.050 or higher. I know it is hard for people to give out their winning numbers but I need a "ballpark"-so at least I know I am "playing the same sport"...Thanks

Nicks 5.0 mentioned me in his post, so I'll tell ya little bit more about my car. I've got the crane 2031 cam, with 1.7 roller rockers, and the "P" heads. I love the way my car performs. Nicks5.0 was right, I've only been able to get 100mph trap speeds, but I also had little, if no traction and lowering springs on my car. With tires and suspension, I'm sure that number would be a few mph's higher. Anyways, the cam is also a good blower cam if you choose to go that route in the future. hope this helped...josh
