Porting and polishing
Ok guys, i dont see summer coming anytime soon so it looks like i am going to have some fun with the car. Time to remove the heads and start porting. I have gt40x heads on my baby. What gasket would you use for the exaust and intake ports??? I have the b cam in there now and i was thinking to switch to the ecam but i like were the bcam makes power. I am also going to port my intake as well. Also should i go a inch in the intake port or 3/4 inch. what about on the exaust? I know i am going to polish up the exaust ports, but with a efi car i have to leave the intake ports rough right? The porting work shouldnt be to hard i have my dad with me who has worked in a machine shop all his life but he didnt do to many heads just his, back in the day. also with the bcam should i invest in some rr's as well? 1.7 right? what brand should i get.\
thanks again guys

I can't tell you what gaskets you want to use, but i can tell you that i've heard you want to go 1" into the intake port for better diameter blending. I've heard that on both EFI and carbureted engines you want to leave a satin finish in the intake ports to leave a little bit of turbulance in the air stream to mix the air/fuel on the way into the cylinders. It's more critical in carbureted vehicles, but it's still important in FI engines as well.
As for polishing i've heard two sides of the argument. 1. you smooth it mirror finish to eliminate any air friction for higher flow, or 2. You leave that a satin finish as well so that carbon can build up in the porous surface and the carbon will retain heat in the exhaust better, which retains more energy and speeds up the exhaust flow. A B-cam with 1.7 roller rockers will give you something like 284* total duration and .512" gross lift, which is about the maximum for the stock piston notches. I just bought a B-cam to go with my 1.7's and GT40 heads, which i'll be porting as well. Hope this helps.

Use a felpro 1415 on the exhaust side, and a 1250 on the intake side.
Use a dye around the ports, then center the gasket on the head as good as you can, and then scribe lines around the inside of the gasket ports. towards the bottom of this page has some pictures of my P heads in the porting process http://stangnet.cardomain.com/id/fiveohpatrol That aluminum should be ALOT easier to port than these were

Same with the intake as well is the intake ports on the head what grit did u stop at? What head gasket did u use? I was just looking at ur mods u have everything i got except i have a tremec 3550 and exaust but im sd. Any one know which gasket is bigger 1250 or 1262?

Didn't polish to a mirror finish on any of it but got it fairly smooth. Not sure of the grit, but started with a carbide bit, and moved to a cartridge roll to smooth it out.
It was actually 302man that did the porting, so shoot him a PM if you have any specific questions. He did an awesome job for me. I couldn't even begin to give a guess on a hp gain, because I moved from ported E7's and a mild cleanup on the intake, to ported GT40P's and a heavier ported intake. I wouldn't try to find an intake gasket bigger than the 1250, you won't need one any bigger.

If it were me, I would pollish everything. Just because aluminum is so easy to work. Don't get crazy on the intake side, just try to smooth any casting fash. Port/pollish about 1-1.5" in on the intake side. Use a 1250 intake gasket. I think these heads are a 1250 already, so you shouldn't have to do much work. The 1262's are bigger, but you need to keep port velocity up and the 1250's do this very well. Exhaust use a 1415 felpro. You can pollish the exhaust ports to a mirror if you want, but its up to you.
Head gaskets... I like the 8742 pt2 for N/A and power adders. For serious power adders I like the 9333 pt1 . Both are Fel-pro gaskets. After you port/pollish everything, I suggest that you use an intake gasket sealer for the lower intake . I like " Permatex high tack " gasket sealer. Use black silicone to seal the ends of the intake with. Put some around the water ports too . You should be ok.

I didn't get the head gaskets from Summit. They had no idea, so I went to my local speed shop and got them. I had them order them in. ($18 each ) I would not mirror finish the intake side. Just do the standard pollish look on it. The exhaust you can pollish to your hearts content. Believe me, I am no pro at this. I just like to see what I can do with stuff. Its a challange to see how close I can get to the professionals !

You're talking about felpro gaskets here right? I would imagine any autoparts store, if they dont STOCK them, they could get them... a place like autozone or even your local auto parts store..

made a slight mistake. Been sick lately. The correct part number for a graphite gasket is 8548 pt2 . The improved version is with the stainless steel metal in it (fire ring) is the 9333 pt1. I talked with fel-pro today and thats what they said. The gasket is about .050 thick. Sorry about the wrong info in my earlier posts.
