Default high RPM pop...backfire

ok people it seems like one problem after the other.... got the car to idle great ( an IAC). The car did sit for a couple of months but i pulled it out of the garage again. The car cruises around town great, but when i jump on it (any gear) it pulls like a mad man till 4800-5000rpms and then pops or backfires .... used to pull to 6500 all day...so i popped in new autolite plugs gapped at .54 and dumped the oil..... same result..... i do get an engine light from time to time but it never stays on longer than a minute or so and then turns off any IDEAS?
