Post Torque Converter

Is the TCI Torque Converter a decent model? Is a torque converter difficult to install? (IE do i have to take out my tranny?)

Yes you will have to remove your transmission to replace the torque converter (same as for the rear main seal); it's easy if you've done it before, but if not, I'd give it an entire day to do. I haven't tried a TCI converter yet, bro. I've had excellent luck with B&M converters, and a LOT of guys here will tell you PI's are the best out there.

I can speak from personal experience I was NOT happy with TCI's transmission rebuild kit equipped with the "TranScat" shift kit. Well, I take that back, everything but the transcat kit was fine, hehehe. Go with a PI, and you won't be sorry. You get what you pay for in converters.

I've never had any problems with my tci converter. I like it but can't say the same about B&M. It started leaking after 5 months.

I'm happy with my PI Converter. You do get what you pay for. The PI unit is a little more expensive but I have yet to hear that they are not completely happy with it. Go with the PI. There is even a group purchase of PI's going on.

The only thing I can say about B&M and TCI is they may give you the stall you want but they probably aren't going to be as strong as the other big name race converter companies and another thing to think about is torque multiplication. A B&M and TCI only have around 1.8-2.0 and the PI has 2.8 pretty big diff if you run some numbers. There is a guy that works for Emerald Torque converters that builds customs ones. I got a C4 converter with 3000-3200 stall 2.8 multiplication and built to hand Nitrous and transbrake for $565 to my door.

Right on about getting a top name brand convert for the AOD - they're kind of a special breed. The "cheapies" won't give you the torque multiplication, plus balancing, leaks, and other durability problems. I've heard of other guys having problems w/B&M. I did some research, ended up with an Art Carr - it went in a heavy car with stock HO & road gears, so kept the lockup for mileage and went 2500 rpm stall. EXTREMELY satisfied - had over a year and absolutely no complaints. GREAT torque multiplication in 1st & 2nd. Another good one is www.converter.com (Precision). Carr will change your stall once within a year, too, if it doesn't work out to be exactly what you want. For lots of good AOD tech info, check www.baumannengineering.com
