Question smoke and pinging problem

I have a 67 289 2v with a C4. When It gets warm it pings while trying to accelerate at little - 3/4 throttle, and some times it only does it real quick after it shifts gears. This is with 89 octane. Do I need to advance the timing or retard it? It also smokes real good and pings while I try to accelerate when its real warm after ideling for a while, like at a long red light. The motor has 135K original miles. I am open to any Ideas to fix this. Thanks AJ

Hey AJ, if you want to keep running the lower octane you will need to retard the timing. Go back 2 degrees at a time till it quits. If its running good where its at just start using at least 92 or 93 octane. As far as the smoking after idle for awhile sounds like the valve stems seals are gone. At idle you have have high vacuum and it pulls the oil in through the valve guides. With that many miles it may be time for a valve job.

Bill, thanks for the response. I will start running 93. I see what you mean on the smoke after a long idel. I'll look into the seals. AJ
