Need advise on muffler choice
I'm looking to replace the factory mufflers on my dailly driver which is an '88GT. I want something with a nice sound but not too loud that can be heard blocks away!
What would be a good choice besides Flowmasters?

You might wanna talk to 88 workcar about his offer, I am not at that point yet. Ryan

Re: Need advise on muffler choice
I'd say just go with the flowmasters. The 3-chambers aren't in the "loud as hell" category as far as I know.

Re: Need advise on muffler choice
Sounds sweet but kind of loud. Maybe they won't sound as loud on a stock exhaust system. Your car sounds as if it has headers and aftermarket exhaust pipes. What cam do you have in that thing BTW

Without cats, the 3 chambers are still pretty loud with headers and 2 1/2" pipes. I couldn't stand for mine to be any louder. The guys at the dyno shop held their fingers in their ears while my car was being dynoed. Rev

Re: Need advise on muffler choice
I don't want flowmasters anyway. I already have a car with them, my '82GT
This is only for a bone stock '88GT that I use for my daily driver. Since I need new mufflers for inspection, I figured I would get an aftermarket set and get a nice tone while I was at it.

Re: Need advise on muffler choice
My rusty ole 3 chbr's are dumped, and with an or x-pipe, man it's pretty loud, i can barely stand it, It has a drone for sure, when i had cat's and stock headers and tailpipes they were extremely quiet.
My buddy has some spintech's street mufflers that are actually pretty quiet in the low rpm's, but sound mean under wot.

Re: Need advise on muffler choice
My Dynomax's really aren't that loud. It sounds pretty loud in that soundclip, but the video camera was sitting on the ground right between the exhaust tips. At idle it is very, very mellow and quiet. When you nail it, it does get louder, but nothing obnoxious.
I have longtube headers with a 2-1/2" h-pipe. The cam is 224°/234° and .496"/.520". If you have a stock exhaust (manifolds and cats) then the Dynomax's will be much quieter than they are on my fastback. |

Re: Need advise on muffler choice
Which dynomax mufflers do you have....maybe I'll look into a set? My 82GT has SINGLE chamber flowmasters with 2.5 inch exhaust, headers and H pipe so you can imagine who loud that is!

Re: Need advise on muffler choice
I was also considering the Flow-tech afterburners but I think they might be loud too because of their chamber design instead of how the turbo mufflers are designed.
