![]() Okay guys, i went racing last night , i blew out 1st and 2nd gear on my very first run, that sucked. Well i have decided that i would convert to an automatic because of the thing i am going to do to the motor in a couple of months. What would be best a C4 or AOD? Does anyone know of a full kit to convert to automatic? I have piced some things together(convertor, tranny, computer, flywheel, engine plate, driveshaft?, and new shifter). i am not sure that is all that i need please help ...... Thanx

![]() If money is not a problem get a used c-4. Send it to art carr and get a transbake installed along with a reverse-manual valve body. I know of people running c-4s with 700hp + in pro street cars.

![]() What are your ET's at 1/8 and 1/4?
What is your mph at 1/4? What gears in the rear? What torque? If you are bracket racing, I would go LenTech AOD with 3k to 4k stall, NO LOCKUP, TRANSBRAKE is mandatory. Use narrow ratio gear set with 4.30 rear end gears for 6,500 rpm at the traps or 4.57 gears puts you at 7,200 rpm at the traps. Go with a spool if it is a track only car, or with a locker or tsd rear end if a street car. Lockers break, and tsd's eventually wear out. Spools are the way to get repeatable et's in bracket racing. Run the tallest slick you can fit under your chassis, (for good mph) and the steepest gear to put you at your highest terminal rpm at the trap (for lowest et's.) I like 4.40 circle track gears with 34 inch slicks. But if you have more than 600 ft lbs of torque, you might consider going with a true richmond drag gear which features softer gear faces / hardening only at the surface. Hope this helps..... The AOD from LenTech should be good for over 1,000 hp with no lockup and transbrake. It is a great transmission when properly prepared, and you can drive it home at reasonable rpms. You can also consider a Liberty 5 speed if you are drag racing only, or a Jerrico transmission would work good too. These can be set up with torque converters if you want to eliminate the shift time loss when you engage a clutch.

![]() I'd go Lentech AOD or AODE. I think for the major mods you've got planned I'd probably go to a Strip Terminator Lockup. It will handle over 750hp. If you're still street/highway driving it, you'll have the OD function, plus you'll have manual control over lock-up which is fantastic for racing. It effectively turns the three speed into a four speed. The Lentech transbrakes are the quickest out there for an AOD. Personally, going to the Lentech was the best thing that I've ever done with my car.

![]() Jeff said it all,
The C-4 is a 50 year old design. The FMX transmission was a much stronger unit and found its way behind the Clevelands in the early 70's. The AOD is built around the FMX set up. C-4's are basically ok if built for full race. But the LenTech is fully modern, will support a good 300-400 more horsepower, and they offer the advantage of the 4th gear. It is possible, with a 4.86 gear and 4,500 rpm stall converter to run as a 4 speed. I do not recommend this for a street or highway driven car, but you could expect to drop nearly a half second on your ets with this combination. Jeff, what rear end gear are you running? I love your 121 mph times there Jeff. You must be pushing near 500 hp!!! I was 136 to 138 at 9.2 but ran 4.57 gears with a C-6 and the Tallest slicks I could run at the time.
