engine soon light
my light has been coming on after the car has been running for a while. I am trying to see if it comes in certain situations, but don't see a pattern. It usually takes about 5 minutes of driving before it comes on. I took it up to Advance Auto to see if we can get some codes, but he hooked it up and it came up as nothing! Any ideas? Does Ford dealer check codes for free? we have no autozones too close by!
PS shoudl i be driving it any differently? I am still raggin on it and racing it every chance i get!

If the light is on and they couldn't get ANY codes, I guarantee you they're not doing it correctly. Even if everything is 100% fine, it will STILL give you a code to say that...or maybe I'm reading your post wrong and he DID come up with a code 11/111???? Go someplace else, and post your codes here. No, Ford does not check codes for free. Any place that is has a garage is going to charge something.
Why not try pulling codes yourself? It's not that hard, and if I remember correctly, on your year of Mustang at least, you can do it with a paper clip. No, seriously, I'm not making that up. There's two spade connectors in the EEC TEST plug you can short and make the EEC go into diagnostic mode. Google it. Just as an educated guess, I'd say it's probably HEGO (oxygen) sensors. The 5-minute drive necessary to make it come on is almost a dead giveaway.

thanks i will try another place and see if they can read something. would the o2 sensor make it run any differntly? i am not noticing a difference in performance when it is on. i continue to rag on it daily, have to! i also wasted about half of my new DR's today impressing a friend! should i stop ragging on it if it is the o2 sensors? thanks for replies

my 89 gt was doing the same thing and i changed the O2 sensor, but it still does the same thing, about 5 minutes of running.
Havent found the prob yet, but its got something do with the exhaust.

It could be a few different things, like the ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor, or EGR not operating properly, O2 sensors (as mentioned by Capri306), ...You have to get the codes. Did they do a engine running test as well? or just the KOEO (key Off, Engine Off) test?

i went there first and had the car off and then started it up after he hooked up the machine. i started it and it read nothing! I then left thinking that maybe the light had to be on (which he told me it did) and came back 10 minutes later after driving home. We left it running this time and it came up with nothing. is this guy just a dumbass or what?
o2 sensors a big deal in performance or the other thing you mentioned?
