I have painted a car before (used to have a '66 galaxie 500), but I don't feel comfortable explaining it. I can tell you however there are some guys in the Classic Forum that know there stuff about painting.

I painted it in my father's garage which is nice because it is hard lined front to back on each wall. There is a compressor port every 10 feet. It doesn't have a hood though and it was tough to keep dust and debris off the paint.

I do suggest buying more paint than you need to allow yourself to setup the spray pattern and gun to your liking and get some experience with your stroke. See how and where the paint builds up as you go side to side on a junk panel.

It can be frustrating, just keep your cool and TAKE YOUR TIME and always remember how far your gun is away from the panel. Sometimes as your going along you start to get closer or futher away and screw something up. THIS IS IMPORTANT: try and maintain a self-check mode in your brain and keep yourself calm and collected.

Now if anyone has a nice list of procedures for him, please step in...

I don't think painting your car is one of those things you want just start off cold turkey on ... takes a ton of practice to even get fair at it. Not to mention if you don't have the materials or knowledge to know how to properly prep the old paint and keep the dirt and dust off, you're gonna end up with a mess ... if you try it at least have someone with you that has some experience.
By the way, have you priced automotive paint lately ? It don't come cheap !!
Thats my $.02 worth
