It'd be a lot easier to just bump the timing down and add a restrictor plate, IMHO. However, as was stated previously,

only things really to detune are , (i'm assuming there is a drivability problem)

fuel and spark. timing should 10* for stock, stock plug gap is .052 , but i like .040 (but i spray)

make sure fp is about 32 psi fatter is fine, but leaner is bad.

so what is the issue your having? and you can't port the maf , just upgrade it, but unless you have heads or a power adder it won't do anyhting. plenty of airflow to support about 300 true hp. same goes for the intake.

If you ask me, I think all cars are detuned. There isn't a vehical out there, except for maybe the exotic cars that most people can't afford, that isn't putting out it's full potential.
That's why we have a huge aftermarket out there.

the 93''s make the same hp as the previous years. they changed how they tested them and they show lower number but in reality there the same.

i could be wayyyyy off. but in the first post he asks how to detune. then he asks why they detuned. like i said i could be way off, but i think he was asking how to tune the car UP and not DOWN.

i got the same thing.....

and if thats case, as stated b4, they are the same, pretty much, i'm sure w/in about 10 hp anyway.

'87-'92 was all rated exactly but in fact, in '93 ford changed how they rated hp, in '89 there was different cam, '89+ was mass air, and minor changes in the exhaust throughout the years, '93 did NOT use forged pistons....again, nothing notably changed, but slightly different.

personally i think it's because the lt1 was available starting in '93 for camaro's and TA's, and the 5.0 could still kick it's ass, so by calling it 205 hp compared to 275 hp corvette motor...you know, kinda adds insult to injury.

so w/ that being said....if you want free or super cheap performance try this........

set timing to 12*-14* (use premium now, and drop if it's hot outside 12* is fine all the time and usually 14 is as well)

remove the intake silencer (if it still has one) bolted on the back of the airbox on the lt. fenderwell. then use a k@n filter in the box

use a 180* stat, stock is 192* and 160* is too cold, you'll run phat all the time.

set the tps to .980-.990 w/ key on/engine off

make sure the tb is fully opened w/ the foot to the floor from inside the car, not by hand(pull the tube and have someone stomp on it).....many many many cars from the factory need to be shimmed, and it's like your not fully WOT

next biggest gain is about $400 total, ring and pinion. other than nitrous, your biggest bag for the buck. i like 4.10's but some people are scared of them, and only want 3.73's

you can tell your stock gears by the door tag, "ax code" M=2.73, Z=3.08 , and E=3.27 (aod's only avail.)

ok, thats all for now.........i'm out of breath.

I think, when he asked "How do you detune a 93 GT 5.0", he was referring to Ford and how they did it and THEN went on to ask why.
He probably noticed the difference in HP numbers between the '87-92 5.0 and "thought" the 93 was some how detuned, which, as most of us know, wasn't the case.
His assumption was based on the fact that he "thought" they detuned it.

I believe the 93 Cobra's were detuned for the sake of insurance. I think I read that somewhere a while back.

The Mustang Cobra was detuned to avoid warranty claims on the T-5. While it did have a Cobra intake and GT-40 Iron heads, in addition to a 65mm T/B, and 70mm MAF, it also had a less aggressive Cobra specific camshaft, and a computer that used very conservative fuel/timing curves. Anyway, just a couple quick changes and those '93 Cobra's pick up a whole lotta attitude.

I wouldn't bet on a '93 GT outrunning a '93 Z28. With equal drivers, stock for stock off the floor, I'd expect the '93 Z28 to pull nearly 1/2sec on the '93 GT in the 1/4. That being said, given a few years, the LT-1 is tired and broken down

With the aforementioned changes to the engines, I don't believe the MAF cars made as much hp as the SD cars from the factory. Most of the 1/4 mile times I see seem to indicate that as well. The fuel/timing curves in the computers likely got a little less aggressive as time went on, but that's just my theory.

Technically, I would think that the hypereutic aluminum pistons in the '93 would make more power than the forged pistons. Not only was the seal better (less oil consumption for emissions) but they should be lighter.

Having owned a 95 Formul LT1, I gotta tell you those things are quicker... til they break down like mine did at 80k- but anyway...

The addition of Mass AIr, exhaust changes, and small here's and there's did make the 87 probably the fastest car at a true 225. 93's were rated at 215 (my friend got one new when I was a freshman he could drive and his parents semi wealthy). They started measuring at the fly wheel that year I believe. I read that somewhere. Anyway- didn't know that about the cobra- always seemed fishy. I heard they came with 2.73's but the source (he had a rebuilt title cobra) was unworthy... anyone know?

Okay everywhere I look says 205 hp in 93. Here's a site that gives a good bit of info if anyone cares about the hp changes...

The '93 5.0 were rated with all the accessories on the engine. The earlier 5.0's were rated without them. They all had the same internals but just a different calculation method; hence the 10hp difference.
