Question injected motor to carburated motor

I have a 1989 GT with 141,000 I also have a 68 Mercury Montego with 302 I would like to put the motor from the mercury into the mustang but not sure about the what stuff I need to keep and what I can cut. I want to do a total transplant, out with the injected and in with the carburation. If NEone has any info to help me in this process it would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Fletch's Carburated 5.0 site. It will have everything you will need to know about the change.

I did it with my 87 gt. Ive got a 347 bottom end toped with peformer rpm heads, edlebrock performer rpm airgap intake, holley 600 carb, all msd ignition including distributor, electric fan, manual steering fms jet hot headers.

When I did it I took out the engine, complete computer harness, from the cpu to the motor. took out the fuse block harness, brake booster, pretty much every single thing i could. had the engine bay stripped, and painted the same as car. I put the fuse block harness back in, brake booster. left everything else out. set the motor, ran a few wires for the temp, oil, ignition, etc. modified a throttle bracket, hooked up a external electric fuel pump under the hood. you have to drop the tank and remove the factory efi pump and put in an equal lenth pipe with a filter sock. I first tried to fire it up with the efi pump still in there but it couldn't suck enough fuel through the efi pump so i did that.

the car runs great. it will keep up with my buds 03 cobra no problem. I did not put any of the smog stuff back on either.

Good luck and i hope this helps

Joe

Fletch's site really helped me out:

Look in the tech section. Its a pretty straight forward swap. Only have to be creative on the fuel system, thats the only thing needing serious time. Wiring is straight forward too.

Hope that helps.

strip both engines to longblocks. cut out all the mustang wiring and hoses your not gonna use. (dont cut out the headlight harness.. etc) put the longblock in your car.. bolt on intake of yoru choice, same with carb and dizzy. run a carbed type fuel pump like a holly red/blue/black by puttting it in the back of the car.. low as u can mount it. take the stock FP out and replace with a 6-8 inch rubber hose. mount accessories u want on the front of the engine, run hoses,wires,etc.. and enjoy
