Z303 Cam and Z heads
Anyone have any comments on Z303 cam? How does this cam idle?
Anyone have any comments on the Z heads? I'm considering the 390 HP Long Block from Ford Racing. |

Re: Z303 Cam and Z heads
I knew a guy that had the z-cam, It had the sickest lope on the idle.
he said the cam would start making power around 3k+, IMO, a 302 with with a z cam would need like 4.30 gears to even feel streetable on the lowend. Id suggest only using this in a 347+ cube with the right pistons, not my experience personally though, just from what I've researched. who knows? some guys might use them on 302's all the time.

Re: Z303 Cam and Z heads
Here's the long block that I was looking at using. My stang is a 3rd vehicle, so it's really a sunday driver. But I don't want to be stalling at idle because the cam is too rough. My other option is the E303 cam.

Re: Z303 Cam and Z heads
I ran the E303 cam for a while and it made good power but idled like crap for the most part.
E303 Dyno The custom cam I have now has .566 lift and idles great. I havent dyno'd with it yet but it does make more power cause I trap 2 mph more than with the E cam. If it were me I would go with the big Z cam or a custom cam the E cam is a pain in the @ss with all the idle and vacuum issues it has. Just make sure you get an intake manifold that matches the powerband of the cam you choose and you will be all good.

Re: Z303 Cam and Z heads
Cam,
I've heard good things about the TFS intake, and in all honesty I would be calling Comp Cams or Crane about what you would need on a cam as considering what you are looking for, a custom cam may be just what the doctor ordered. Once you have a good idea what your setup is going to be, I'm sure that they can come up with a good solution for you that makes good power while maintaining a sense of streetability.... When I had the 306 worked over, we found out that the cam in the Kaufmann was a custom job. Considering the good power and streetable manners, I can't complain...

Re: Z303 Cam and Z heads
I like the e-cam, idles great for me, just had to work out some bugs, idles clean, I like to go through a drive through without killing everyone in the parking lot with exhaust fumes, the e-cam is 50 state smog legal
