Post AOD converter questions...

It's that time of year again... time for more mods... I have about $400-500 to spend. I'd really like to get a new converter(car is still kind of slow off the line even with the 4:10 gears) but had a few questions. If my tranny dies(starts slipping, clutches get fried etc) will my converter die with it or can I re use it with a new tranny.(yes I have a tranny cooler) I heard that with a nonlockup converter if you're in 3rd gear and floor it, it flashes to your stall speed(cruising in 3rd at 40mph at 2krpms and when you hit it, it would jump to 2800 or whatever stall is). Also I know a lot of you guys run PI Stallions and they are the best etc etc but I really can't afford one. Anyone else running a diff brand of converter and like it? What kind of et improvments did you get?

If you torch the tranny and broken piece parts go floating around, they'll wind up in your converter and eventually spell the demise of it. I installed a remote filter on the way out to the cooler. I don't plan on the Lentech taking a dive any time soon, but after the investment in the tranny and converter I thought a $25 filter kit was well worth the effort. It adds a little extra weight to my car, but again its worth it.

So you're saying for $25, I can get a filter kit that will prevent it from hurting the converter?

Oh and just curious, how many inches is the cowl on the hood on your car?

Yeah, the B&M remote filter kit is only $25. Plumb it in between the tranny and the cooler (I put mine on the right side frame rail by where the charcoal cannister goes). That way if the tranny breaks, the contaminants are filtered out before they get to the pump in the converter. The filter is also a great way to extend the life of the tranny to begin with. The regular filter in the pan only catches the big stuff, the remote filter unit catches stuff down to 10 microns...and it uses a standard FL-1A filter to boot.

My cowl is 2.5 inches. Its the Cervini's Stormin' Norman hood.
