Gears and Diff.
Right now I have a 1994 8.8 with limited slip. It has 28-spline axles and Richmond 3.73 gears. My dad just bought an 8.8 out of a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport to put into an 88 jeep wrangler. It is an 8.8 with 31 spline axles and stock 3.73 gears.
My question is my rear end needs rebuilding. Would it be worth takning the diff out of the Explorer and put it in my rearend. I know I would have to go buy new 31-spline axles. Also what gears are better Richmond 3.73 or stock 3.73's out of an Explorer? Thanks

In my opinion, gears are gears, as long as they're not cheap crappy gears, there is nothing wrong with Ford gears as long as they aren't damaged and as long as they're installed right. As far as the 31 splines go, I donno if it's worth it to you. I honestly don't know if you need them, with the mods that you list and the car that you list. If you talking about just taking the third member out of the differential and the pinion and putting them in the other rear end yourself, don't do that, have a shop install them unless you've done it before. Why does your rear end need rebuilding? Bent axle? Leak? whats up?

The reason it needs rebuilding is everytime I go into a turn it starts squeeling really really loud. Sounds like ear piercing crickets. The reason I was going with the 31-spline is that I am going to a 393W. We can do the work ourselves thats no problem. Dad was a machanic for many years.

I wouldnt use the axles out of the explorer, just use the gears, im not sure if the explore axles could be wider or something.
and my rearend squeals, but it is my tires rubbing on the wells, becuase clearance is tight, if your diff, doesnt leak, and still does two wheel burnouts, i wouldnt worry about it too much, unless you need the gears, then all you have to do is put the gears in, i would only use the axles if you get a different trac lok carrier, because the explorer might be an open diff?? not sure.

The axles from the explorer are way too long. I was going to buy superior or moser, etc. Well we called Ford and AGAIN they were wrong. They said that Explorers do not come with open rear-ends and that all are limited slip. Well this is a stock rear-end out of a 99 Ford Explorer and it is NOT limited slip. Oh well
We also found a compelete guide to trouble shooting a rearend noise. Not a single one has the noise my car is making. IT is so embarssing when you drive buy other people looking at your car and it starts squeling really really loud. Thanks guys for all your help.

Where did you find the guide to rear end noise? I get an occasional squeal from the back when I turn near full lock. I'm curious what it is.
I get some noises from my other rear end, but I don't think that would be the proper guide for those... Thanks, Rich D. |

Have you guys tried changing the rear end oil? Or checking the level? What about your brakes? it could be brake noise, it could be a bearing, all of that stuff doesn't warrant going to all of that trouble to change out a gear set. If your pops is a mechanic, ask him what the noise is.

He has never heard the noise before. We have put in new seals changed the rearend fluid twice, put friction modifier in, changed the brakes, and changed the Driveshaft. Still have the noise. I will send you a link about the noises later today or tomorrow. How hard is it to rebuild a differenital. The kit is $40 so I may need to do that.

that is the first i heard about a car doing that, i would pull the axles out, and check the wheel bearings, just rub your hand on them, and see if there is any imperfections.
but good luck.....

look at the surfaces on the axles to see if there are any heat marks or wear marks. when you have the axles out, take the driveshaft off and spin the differential and see if there is bearing noise. Could be the main diff bearings or the pinion.
